Not a horrible Disney film by any means (that one came a year later >>) but it's definitely up there with the weakest. Weak characters, weak plot, the worst Disney villain ever and some forgettable songs with only one being a true stand out. Even the animation isn't that great, looking like a Saturday morning cartoon at times. I guess they were trying to emulate Emperor's New Groove style, but that didn't work!

I'd give it 2.5 stars, it really is that weak imo.

The music for the movie is its only redeeming quality. I love "Will The Sun Ever Shine Again?" and "Patch of Heaven" is just a fun song. Though the animation isn't great, there are current TV shows, even movies by second-rate studios, with worst. This might be the one Disney film I don't watch multiple times. I was hoping this article would go more in depth of the production of this film.

It's hard to believe this movie came out only 12 years ago. It feels like a totally different era. The time when you still expected a Disney hand-drawn feature to come out every year or two. Sadly it seemed like they weren't even trying anymore with this one. I have to admit I've never seen it, so I can't judge it as a whole, but what I've seen just feels so uninspired. At least they made Princess and the Frog and Winnie the Pooh to give a more respectable ending to hand-drawn animation.

In this movie's defense, Home on the Range does exactly what it sets out to do. Unlike some of the other post-Renaissance films there is no attempt to be hugely thought-provoking or emotional. It's just a straightforward family comedy. And it clears that incredibly low bar.

Honestly, I do not blame this film for the failure of traditional animation (though it did not help either), since it was after Treasure Planet that the studio just gave up on it. This film receiving the hate for something that was decided before its release was a bit unjust in my opinion. I do not think this film is the worst in the canon, but it is by certainly not good. It was just very underwhelming from start to finish, and the characters were very hard to root for, or to care about in any capacity. It is really sad. The studio really needed to slow down and re-evaluate at the time, instead of churning out more and more product than they could clearly handle. I cannot believe that the yodeling song exists. What is even more sad is that after thinking things could not get any worse from this film, IT DOES.

I tried seeing this movie when it appeared on TV and from the first 30 mins it wasn't great but I still was able to watch it fine. But then after those 30 mins I just started blanking out and even remember getting so bored that I just watched the rest of it while being on my phone, so I don't even remember the climax of this movie. I never resort to being that bored unless its something I've watched so many times and I just like some background noise, but the first time seeing a movie, that's kinda bad I personally think.
The remote things I remember is how nice the animation was and kinda that fun "Home on the Range" song in the beginning. Like you said though it's not the worst but it really isn't what Disney was great for either which is a shame.

Ah, the initial nail in the coffin of Disney Animation.
Now, like "Lilo & Stitch" and another Disney film I'll get to next, I was so pumped to see "Home on the Range" so much that I saw the film four times, each with my parents, cousins or grandparents. But unlike "Lilo" and the next film I'll get to, I can understand why this is one of Disney's worst films. What started out as a film with good potential and a cool title named "Sweating Bullets" sadly turned into not only Disney's interpretation of Barney the Dinosaur, but a dismal "Emperor's New Groove" wannabe.
One of the reasons why "Home on the Range" doesn't work for me is that most of the characters are ridiculous while being happy, smiling and talking with Western accents. And also, I've wanted to see Grace stand up to Mrs. Calloway and really tell her that Maggie is right to catch Alameda Slim. She could've been a strong character, but at least she made laugh with her "tone-deaf" singing.
The only thing thhat I liked about "Home on the Range" and what made me pumped to go see it four times in the theartes was Alan Menken. I mean, whoa! The man who gave us epic scores and songs for "Beauty and the Beast", "Aladdin" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" wrote the songs and score for this film. But know that I understand, it's not one of Alan's best works for Disney. Although I liked the opening song and Slim's yodel song and the score was pretty decent.

The puns and generic story make this tough to watch but there are some good things. The old west artistry is beautiful and I like Menken's western score (the man can do it all). I actually like the yodeling song because it has a surrealist feel that reminds me of Elephants on Parade, which was fun.
It's not a good movie but isnt my least favorite Disney film
