Your animation of Sweet is one of the best from the company. Surprised you could keep up with his voice actor. :)

I love this movie, I never understood people's problem with it until I was older and could see its obvious flaws with character and world development.

I still love its adventure and action and want to be in the world more than we're given. The game was great for that but a 2 hour version would have been superior.

When I first saw this I felt that Rourke was sleazy and slimy from the beginning and didn't trust him at all so when he turned out to be the bad guy it wasn't a surprise it wasn't a twist.
The same with Helga, it would have been better if she turned out to be a good guy at the end a secret agent or something working under cover Milo would be surprised and she could say something like "What did you think that I was some Femme Fatal?"

Also, this film has probably my favorite prologue that was cut: The film was gonna open with a group of Vikings that were searching for Atlantis under the guide of the Shepherd's Journal book before being destroyed by the Leviathan. But instead, the filmmakers decided to open with the sinking of Atlantis which would open stronger. Oh well.....

This version of the prologue is actually from the "Atlantis" CD-ROM game "Trail by Fire" which has much better sound than the one on the DVD and I don't know why but the reason why I loved the Viking prologue was that it made me laugh.

I really like "Atlantis" for how it looked, the casting, James Newton Howard's musical score and the designs for the characters and scenes. Something a little diffrent for Disney nowadays.

But...there is a cliche that happens in most animated movies from the late 1990's on where there's a character who appears as one of the nicest you have seen and all of the sudden, throughout the movie, you find out this character has a shadow-side to him or her. I mean...this happened in "Frozen", "Monsters, Inc.", "Zootopia", "Toy Story 2 & 3", etc. And for some reason, that villainous character comes across as under-developed and even irritating. That's where Rourke comes in. Rourke starts out as a grandfatherly/mentor-esque character who kinda grumbles like a regular curmudgeon senior would say. But then, towards the end of the second act, not only does he reveals himself and Helga as the true bad guys, but the rest of the crew as well! I mean...Vinny, Mole, Dr. Sweet, Audrey and the rest. They suddenly turn bad, in a weird and uncomfortable way, only to redeem themselves when Milo gets punched by Rourke after he delivers an anti-intellctual speech about the crew getting money at the end.

This film, along with "Titan A.E." and "Monsters, Inc.", are some of the worst examples of the "suprise-twist villain" cliche I have ever seen in any movie. But at least, that cliche worked well in "Treasure Planet". Silver realized that Jim was much more important than the treasure itself.

I pretty sure I remember reading somewhere that the longer version of this movie was going to feature squid bats, lava whales, and giant insects while introducing Kida earlier while moving Atlantis back to appear near the final act of the film. It sounded really cool, but the problem came about when alot of the creatures were proving to be difficult and expensive to animate, and the executives did not like that the title location was not in a majority of the movie. So they had to drop alot of that stuff, but I guess it would be incredibly expensive to make an Animated movie that would fit all that stuff in.

I completely agree that Kida is one of, if not THE most underrated princesses...along with Merida. She took on 3 guys at once, threw one over her shoulder, and nearly shanked another. Not to turn this into a Frozen rant, but Kida is leagues above Elsa in the badassery department. Elsa ran away from her problems for 98% of the movie and didn't even apologize for what she did. I understand her anxiety and stuff, but come on, lady. You almost put your entire kingdom in the freezer, booked it out of Dodge, and nearly killed your sister. Twice. But back to Kida. Yeah, it's an insult that she's not recognized as an official princess when, um, SHE ACTUALLY IS! Disney needs to get off their "we can't rock the boat" attitude and realize that kids nowadays are more intuitive and not as fragile as they think and can take some intense stuff. Like "The Black Cauldron", they'd NEVER do something like that today. I'm not saying go all out in the darkness department, but my god guys, grow some balls and take some risks like you used to.
