Comments on: Disney Canon Countdown 40: ‘The Emperor’s New Groove’

Ha! Boom baby!! I do agree that “Emperor’s New Groove” is the funniest Disney movie, with “Aladdin” and maybe “Wreck-It Ralph” as runner-ups. And it was a good thing that this film was created to be a comedy rather than what Disney thought of: their own version of “Prince of Egypt”.
But…if I did have to pick a little problem I have with “Emperor’s New Groove”, it would have to be some of Kuzco’s defiant moments, especially the scene where he defiantly walks into the jungle against Pacha’s warnings. I did the same thing as Kuzco to my dad when I “freed” some toads my sister caught. And it was back in 2001, when the movie came out on video and DVD. I even did the “I don’t make deals with peasants” trick that Kuzco did to Pacha. And like Kuzco, who got chased by jaguars, I got my comeuppance: a few painful, yet deserving spankings from my dad. But then, like Kuzco, I changed my ways and went on with life in a good way.
Aside from that nitpick, I love the comic antics between Yzma and Kronk, John Fiedler’s fabulous cameo as the old man whom Kuzco threw out and John Debney’s awesome musical score. And yes, I love the “Sweatbox” documentary. All the trials and errors this film had been, especially through the eyes of Roger Allers and Sting.

I never saw this movie, I did watch the tv series though when it was on Disney Channel.

I remember Disney dropped this into theatres in the first week of December. The avoided a big traditional holiday release with all the marketing bells and whistles and toys. After all the trouble they had producing it, they must not have expected much. They were probably surprised at the good reviews and later Video popularity.

While it is disappointing well never see the original Kingdom of the Sun plan; it’s an amazing achievement that a potential box office disaster had a happy ending.

I always say with a comedy the big test is if it makes me laugh and this does. My favorite gag is when Yzma pulls that lever that takes her to the swamp “why do we even have that lever”. That makes me laugh. A lot of the jokes work for me so I have to say it is a success.
With all of the nightmare production it is amazing it is watchable at all. Great analysis

Not a great entry from Disney but I always had fun watching it as a kid. A rare occasion where the villains are equally hysterical as the heroes! The voice cast was stellar and may Eartha Kitt (Yzma) rest peacefully. I didn’t watch Kronk’s New Groove but I remember watching the New School show on Disney Channel in my early teens. That’s Eisner, sometimes making me want to rip my hair out and sometimes saving a movie. According to the documentary The Sweatbox, a kindly peasant would’ve been switched places with the King as part of the Prince and the Pauper trope, and a woman would fall for him and mope and dope because “Why is the King so nice suddenly? What’s he hiding?” And inevitably she would’ve found out he’s someone else. I’m tired of The Liar Reveal, or as the podcast calls it, “Youuu LIED to me!?” What we ended up with was so much better. A fast and hilarious comedy with a fun, simple story based on a fine fairy tale. Plus, without the total revamp, we wouldn’t have had Kronk! And can we appreciate this is set in South America for a moment? An actual non-western setting.

I always have a ball watching Emperors New Groove! The villains I think make this all work and are so perfectly voiced and I do love the heroes of this movie too but the villains always crack me up the most! Though it had a different idea in the beginning, I think this was a very good end product :))))

I do not care what anyone says, The Emperors New groove is my favourite Disney film, anytime I want to laugh, I just pop on this movie, I love all types of movies especially Walt Disney Animation, but I just want a movie to make me laugh, not cry or make me emotions, just a purely funny movie. Also I love the fact that you don’t always have to put logic in a animated movie, Kuzco broke the fourth wall, there are scenes in the movie which doesn’t make any sense like the scene where Yzma and Kronk were chasing kuzco and pacha, however Yzma seemed to get there before Kuzco and they even realised that in the movie.
