I’ve always loved Dipper vs. Manliness, Boss Mabel, and The Deep End. But I agree that Boys Crazy and Roadside Attraction weren’t very good at all. I’ve come to like Boys Crazy a lot more than I did at first but Roadside Attraction is just bad storytelling.

Roadside Attraction was perfectly fine to me. I liked seeing that spider lady and all those weird gift shops.

But yeah, I did cringe during some of those scenes involving Dipper and all the girls he flirted with. I get the message – if you flirt around too much without being careful about it, you’ll end up hurting someone’s feelings. But when all the girls called Dipper out on what he was doing, I just sat there thinking, “Did Dipper really do anything THAT bad? He asked them for their email addresses. That’s it.”

It’s a problem a lot of shows face, when the writers want to show a male character mess up somehow in a romantic relationship, but don’t want to sacrifice his likability. The end result is that the female character(s) get disproportionately mad at him – usually for something that either wasn’t a big deal, or was completely out of the male character’s control. And that’s never fun to watch as a viewer.

I actually really loved most of the “filler” episodes. The main appeal of Gravity Falls to me were the characters and the comedy. A lot of my favorite episodes were the side-stories that had little to do with the overall plot.

And the Golf War was a wonderful episode. Why you ackin so cray cray?

Personally, my least favorite episode is The Stanchurian Candidate. I was super excited to see Grunkle Stan run for mayor, but the end result wasn’t as funny as I thought it would be.

The episode also devoted a lot of time to Lil Gideon’s return… and to be honest, I always thought he was kind of a weak villain. Bill Cipher was both funnier and more intimidating as the series’s main antagonist.

The Deep End gets a pass from me, mostly because it has my favorite joke in the entire series:

Stan is locked up in “pool jail” with some misbehaving kids. “Pool jail ain’t so bad,” one of them says, “So long as you don’t end up in solitary…”

Cut to a chubby kid looking solemnly out of the grates in the side of the pool. “It’s the nights that are the hardest…”

Roadside Attraction was literal garbage in Gravity Falls form. I hated that episode. The others were hilarious though, at least to me. All of the fun episodes other than RA are great and above most other animated programs.
