Comments on: Disney Canon Countdown 34: ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’

I’d say that is Disney’s most underrated film in the Animated Canon. Were it not for the Gargoyles, I’d say it would be a masterpiece, because almost everything else is done perfectly. The music, the animation is among their best (Minus the CG crowds), not one character seems pointless (Even the Gargoyles. Still don’t like them) (I’d have also have a few more scenes with the Priest, find out his relationship with Quasimodo, etc.) and the music and songs are some of my favourite (When he’s swinging from the bell tower and yelling “Sanctuary”, it’s one of my personal best Disney moments, Visually and Musically) (And again, excluding the obvious!).

In my spare time, I and a friend speak about things we’d change in a movie and how we’d do them differently.

I’m with you on this one. I love this movie and it’s one of my favorites from the time period. The animation is awesome and how can you not love Alan Menken’s epic score? The Latin chanting in the background just elevates it to a whole other level.

I’m not so sure why this film gets ragged on so much. I think it was probably one of the last truly great films of the Renaissance. I also loved all the religious themes in the movie. Esmeralda’s prayer “God Help the Outcasts” is truly one of the most moving scenes in an animated movie. Frollo’s “Hellfire” show a realistic, human aspect to his character. Here’s a man struggling with temptation and completely losing. It doesn’t get more real than that.

In my opinion, this movie is completely underrated and I wish it would get more love than it does, especially from Disney.

Hey! Just got back from a wedding at Monmouth, Illinois. Now I get to talk about my favorite film from the Disney Renaissance.

Believe it or not, growing up in the 90’s, this film always reminded me to keep believing in my Catholic faith. For example, the scenes inside the cathedral and the songs (especially “Hellfire”). If only Menken’s epic score won the Oscar…

If I did had to pick out of a few nitpicks (its NOT THE GARGOYLES!! I actually defend them. They were just trying to comfort Quasimodo in the saddest parts of his life. They were like foster-“grandparents” or foster-“uncles”. And I love their song “A Guy Like You”), it would have to be when towards the end when Frollo reveals the truth to Quasimodo about his mother and throws his cape over him while causing him to fall, that made me felt like Quasimodo was suddenly a damsel in distress. Esmeralda should’ve been the one clinging on for dear life.

But anyways, in conclusion, “Hunchback of Notre Dame” is my favorite film from the Disney Renaissance, more than “Beauty and the Beast” and “Lion King”. (Please don’t kill me Disney fans.)

I feel this was one of the more underrated Disney films. Wile the story wasn’t free flowing and played more like a stage play, it was impressive nonetheless. “Hellfire” was a fantastic song and the character design / set design was beautiful. I’d rate it a 7/10.
