I think it didn’t have a good a one liner. “It’s a story about a boy that…”. The trailers made it kinda vague I think.

The animation industry is flourishing today, and part of that is Hollywood accepting that animation is a real profitable sector of the industry. A side-affect of that is a weird push-pull of audiences slowly but surely coming around to the fact that animation is an valid medium and the industry trying to feel its way through and accommodate changing tastes and attitudes. Growing pains, basically.

A movie like Sausage Party, in the way that it shines a light on and brutally subverts the tropes and expectations that have held back animation in the west for years, is and should be considered important in the discourse of how the industry should evolve beyond long-standing notions of what animation in the US looks like. Not everybody is going to like it, but if that movie can make that message of “animation IS more than kids stuff!” clearer to audiences, then that’s a good thing regardless of what you personally think about the movie itself.

I don’t doubt that the Seth Rogen brand/stamp of approval played a large part in the film’s BO success, but I have all the respect in the world for him for making this type of movie right now. The concept he has for the sequel is intriguing, especially given the real-life controversies surrounding artists’ rights issues in the industry.

More people, yes. And if this had been stop motion, honestly, fewer people would’ve seen it. Stop motion remains niche, but it’ll get there someday. I believe in it.

Or, they could just end up having everyone (including the men) twerking. That always turns people right off and it might be more effective, but I don’t know. Either way, I kinda think that the orgy sequence, given the actual ending of the film, WAS their version of the dreaded “dance party” ending trope.

That’s the first suggestion for that scene I think I love more than the actual sequence, granted my only issue there is that it might have pushed the star gate ending out of the movie, but I’d love it either way.

If I had directed this film, I would have ended it with a typical “dance party” ending after the main conflict was resolved. And slowly… the dancing would get more suggestive. Then the dancing would get explicit. Then, finally, the dance party would devolve into an all-out food orgy.

From that point on, every time the audience saw a children’s movie end with a dance party, they would be reminded of the food orgy. This might be enough to end that trope once and for all.
