Glad to hear that! It knocked my socks, shoes and feet off. Doesn't it have the best animation of any stopmotion film!?

I liked Coraline and Boxtrolls but I wasn't interested in Paranorman. Kubo has to be the best work Laika has done yet!

Sorry I'm late to the party! I just watched Kubo today and I loved it. It has a rare combination of mind-bending animation, exciting action, surprising sincerity and epic storytelling. Matthew McConaughey has turned in two equally great animated films this year with Kubo and Sing!

This is an unforgettable film. I loved the way it used paper and didn't follow a typical treasure hunting plot. I didn't know exactly where they were going or what the end goal was. That kept it unpredictable. It was also very funny with great dialogue.
Mostly I found Kubo to be a very sincere and earnest character I was rooting for. If it had just ended a tiny bit sooner I would have thought it was perfect but still strong

I really enjoyed it! I thought it was the most beautiful stop-motion movie ever. I really appreciated more artistic & mature tone, it was fresh and kind of felt more like a foreign film. Maybe Beetle's jokes were a little meh, and some plot points were kind of obvious, but I loved the music and the characters looked so unique. Kubo himself was likeable & sweet. It was really neat to see Japanese culture explored in a new way. I do think it's Laika's best, some of their films I didn't really like but this one hit the right notes for me. (eyyy!) "A-" from me!

Before the movie started there were three trailers for animated films and they were all being promoted the same way: pop music and an extensive list of A-list actors voicing the characters. So when the movie began, Morgan was right in describing it as a "breath of fresh air". No sequels or slapstick here; this is something original and extraordinary. It has some of the magic and lore reminiscent Miyazaki films and it's nice to have those quiet moments when the film lets everything sink in, instead of rushing off crazy fast.

I have to agree with other opinions that the ending tapered off quite suddenly and that interfered with the storytelling. But this is one of Laika's gems. It has dark twisted moments (that thankfully don't get too "Burton-esq") but also the warm visual moments showing love and affection, and through Kubo's red jacket and the bright yellow leaves.
