Nostalgia Chick rocks and I admire her opinions and presentation, but yeah, her opinions on Ariel, I agree with you there. I’d love to talk to her, I’m sure she’s already gotten a ton of negative feedback about that vid, but I think she’d enjoy chatting about feminism and Disney films and how they influence us.

Have you ever seen the Toei anime version of The Little Mermaid? It’s a much more faithful adaptation of the original fairytale and they even kept the sad ending of the original story and the mermaids do not wear sea shells in it….

Ah I so miss that classic Disney logo over the CGI logo they use in all their films nowadays.

Thank you! I couldn’t agree more with everything you are saying. To me the film is very empowering and it’s frustrating when people take such a surface level observation of it. It is a story about a character who knows where they belong and finds a way to get there and like you say someone who doesn’t let prejudice and classifications stop her from being happy.

I always thought Part Of Your World was a very strong pro-feminist song, and I always loved the lyrics where Ariel sings about not reprimanding your daughters and women taking a stand. If there is any sexism I take issue with in this movie, it might be in the Kiss The Girl scene. Within the context of the movie, the Kiss The Girl song is perfectly innocent and cute and I love the music and Sebastian’s singing. If you take the song by itself though and listen to it as an adult, the lyrics are a bit awkward as it could be taken to be encouraging guys to kiss women without their permission. I don’t understand though why everyone insists Ariel has no agency in the movie because the whole film is about Ariel’s choices and Ariel choosing to defy her culture to pursue her dream. Maybe if Disney gave the mermaids shirts instead of bikini bras the movie might have a better reputation? It should also be noted the drag queen elements of Ursula are likely deliberate as she was inspired by the iconic drag queen, Divine.
