I suppose growing up in the shadow of the renaissance gives you a different perspective- I really appreciate the renaissance for what it is, but I don’t think it’s the be all, end all of animation. So many define greatness by it, and miss out on the enchantment of other films~ I really noticed this as we’ve been going through other films and people are like “this is okay but it isn’t great as it wasn’t the Lion King” and it is just a rather unrealistic, unfair way of reviewing a film. I love films like Mulan and the Little Mermaid but I resent the way other disney films are treated because of them.

I honestly think this era’s overrated, it’s incredibly homogenous:
All of these movies are
“coming of age” (I cannot put enough quotations around that (aside from Beauty and the Beast))”
Romance Driven
Fully Fledged Musicals
based on a pre-existing story
and with the exception of the first 3 have some form of celebrity as the comic relief and a major influence on the aesthetic.

My favorites are Mulan and Aladdin. Mulan because it has the best female heroine and because it’s the most gripping and epic. Aladdin because it has the best sidekick and because it’s the most fun and magical. The Lion King is great obviously. The Hunchback of Notre-Dame has a great score. Controversially, I’m not fond The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast because they carry bad messages and models.

My favorite era so far. Though I love the artistry and beauty of the early Walt Disney films, the movies that were made during the Renaissance speak a language that is closer to my generation. These are the stories and fairy tales I grew up with. Musically speaking, there’s nothing like this era, something that can be greatly attributed to Howard Ashman, who entirely re-defined what a Disney song should be like. There’s not one single film out of this era I don’t enjoy, though I have to admit that Down Under is kind of forgettable in my book. It’s fascinating how much Walt Disney’s Animation improved in a matter of just a couple of films.
