I have always loved OLIVER & COMPANY for the story, the music, and the characters, but now, I appreciate it even more for helping to kick-start the Disney Renaissance. (I actually like to think of it as the first entry in the Renaissance lineup, even though LITTLE MERMAID gets all the credit.)

However, I have to admit that there is one little thing that bothers me- it pertains to who they chose to sing the song “Streets of Gold.” Sheryl Lee Ralph, who voices Rita, had done her fair share of singing prior to the film's release (including her turn as Deena in the original cast of the Broadway musical DREAMGIRLS), so it really seems strange to me that they chose Ruth Pointer to sing the song instead. Mind you, Ruth’s performance is great, but I guess I would have preferred to hear Sheryl…

A few years ago I bought this movie in DVD in the hopes of rewatching it, knowing how much I loved it as a kid. But I hadn't really taken the time to watch it until I read this article :) Thanks, Hannah, for making me want to watch it again! I did it and I had a wonderful time!

Here is the McDonald's commercial at the time of the release of the film that also happened during the releases of "Little Mermaid", "Rescuers Down Under" and even a re-release of "Cinderella".

Maybe McDonald's released a different set? I was referring to these ones released by Burger King in 1996.

I agree with a lot of people, I'm REALLY mixed about "Oliver & Company" but let me tell you about what I like and what I don't like.

WHAT I LIKE: Some of the characters, especially Tito the Chihuahua, some of the songs ("Why Should I Worry", the opening number and the "Buscando Guyaba" song that plays when we see Tito for the first time) and the atmosphere of New York City. "Oliver & Company" and the "Rhapsody in Blue" segment of "Fantasia 2000" will always be two of my favorite homages to the Big Apple.

WHAT I DON'T LIKE: The dark and intense parts of the film where Roscoe and DeSoto attack Dodger and the deaths of Roscoe and DeSoto, by means of electrocution from the train tracks at the climax of the film. Those yelps and whimpers and graphic animation (especially from Roscoe) made this sequence one of the most disturbing and saddest sequences I have ever seen in any movie, period!! I would either have the deaths put offscreen and have the dog yelps replaced with human screams: the Wilhelm scream for Roscoe and the "Aaahh!! Real Monsters" scream for DeSoto.

I mean, isn't there anyone who loves Dobermans???
