It's breaking records in the US because Finding Nemo is very popular and Finding Dory itself received stellar critics. But I'm like you, I don't understand why the critics are so positive. I liked the message (and Mariana De Lama beautifully explained it) but for the rest, I thought the story was linear, generic and even lazy. Dory sets off with a goal, she meets character A, B, C, D - none of which matters - and then she reaches her goal. Her parents are perfect doting parents who don't have hundreds of other eggs to worry about. The tense moments are copy-pasted from Finding Nemo: one is when Dory finds herself alone in a harbor and starts forgetting, the other is when she must convince her parents to let her go save her friends. I didn't hate it, but it's what I would have expected from a direct-to-video sequel. I suppose The Incredibles 2 will have similar success in the US. I hope Coco does something more daring.

I can agree with some of your points, granted I did happen to like it. Although I can agree that they hit a great deal of the same story points (which honestly all movies do) I liked how they took a character, which in the first movie was under utilized and was more of a means to deliver some comedy, and created a meaningful film about her. For me a sequel is more time to spend with the characters you love. But in truth I think it is a grand thing you were "so so" on the film it is people like you which can inject their differing opinions into other projects to bring change to the greater whole. So keep sharing.

Marianna De Lama this was a fantastic article. Thank you so much for contributing to the site with something so heartfelt. I loved the movie and agree with all of your points. Given the subjective nature of movies in general I believe everyone can take something different from a movie. I have been really lucky with have and work with special needs people in my life, and they gave me perspective in how those with special needs are just people living just like the rest of us. To that point Finding Dory, did a fantastic job of showing the viewer that having a special need (Dory's memory problem, Hank's missing limb./PTSD, Destiny's Low vision, or Bailey's Echo-dysfunction) doesn't make you any less of a person, and in needing of love. Which is why I loved Dory's parents so much. Thanks for the article again.

I love reading your thoughts. Thank you for sharing. I never thought about the main antagonist being oblivion. What a striking thought! I also found it moving the way everyone learned to look at the world in a new way. The 'what would Dory do' idea is something we could all learn from.

I guess everyone has different opinions. This is just Marianna's description of what the movie meant to her. Whether you like something or not isn't wrong or right. Most people LOVE Wreck-it Ralph and I think it is fine. I'm glad it emotionally connects with them but it just didn't for a variety for a reasons for me. Anyway, I think as far as the plot I don't think it was actually all that formulaic. Instead of having her meet one character who then would take her on the journey they divided it up having her meet a variety of characters. This kept it unpredictable and different than the first. As far as her being annoying that comes down to personal preference. I don't think Pixar made much of a difference as we saw with Good Dinosaur their name is not enough for a hit alone. It has to be something that connects with people. Plus, this year has been very disappointing at the box office. I think in 2014 Finding Dory would not have done quite so well. Anyway, just my thoughts.

I think this had great messages like that in this movie. And it made me feel for her struggle since I've had my own disabilities that sadly made me feel less special. I just love how this movie handled something that I think some movies can just heavy hand a lot ^.^

**the folowing is just what my opinion **
I don't know why, but most fans and critics in the US like this movie, while everybody else (including me, my family and some friends) think it was OK if not bad, but it wasn't as good as half of the original. Dory was annoying at some parts, the story was going back and fourth between different locations, it was so formulaic and it played safe without taking any risks.
What I said about people liking it in the US might also connect to the fact that it broke records in the US, while it did well across seas, did that happen because it was created by Pixar, and people form other countries didn't care and just wanted a good movie ?
What I hope that this movie will not win an Oscars "because Pixar" like what happened with Brave.
What do you think ?
