In reply to Rachel Wagner. How are the fairies the true heroes? Its their fault for the bad things that happens to Aurora and Philip. They insult Maleficient in the beginning of the film which pisses her off and she curses Aurora, they act like children with the dress which is how Maleficient finds Aurora, they bring Aurora back to the castle before the sun sets on her 16th birthday gee what did they expect would happen when Maleficent clearly said Aurora would die at that same exact time. The fairies continue to be the most annoying characters for me. Based on the fact they insult my intelligence and perhaps ruin what was once my favorite Disney film.

In reply to Manuel Orozco. Ill disagree there. I found the fairies annoying and boring. They are the reason the movie is flawed. Since they recieved more screen time then the actual two characters.

Possibly my favorite Disney movie! I do wish you’d talked about some other elements more, I’d say every Disnerd ever has already heard an earful about Maleficent. Yes, she’s the greatest Disney villain ever and so menacing and well designed and blah blah. 🙂 But I understand the need to focus on her, she’s the standout character.

I’m glad you defended Maleficent from the sad mopey version Disney seems to have reinvented her as (I really hated that movie). But I agree this film is stunning and she is completely terrifying villain. I also love the fairies and how they are the true heroes of the story. Philip is also my favorite Disney prince. He’s so brave!

“Sleeping Beauty”…I would put this film on my “Splits” list because there are some things I like and don’t like from this movie.

WHAT I LIKE: Well…three things. One, the beautiful art direction by Eyvind Earle. Two, the magnificent musical score based on Tchaikovsky’s ballet. And three, if all can agree with me, the dark parts of the movie involving Maleficent. (She was one of the reasons this movie scared me as a kid.)

WHAT I DON’T LIKE: Even though I’m OK with the dialogue from Maleficent, the fairies and the kings, I really don’t like the speaking voices of Aurora and Prince Philip, especially with their operatic singing in “I Wonder” and “Once Upon a Dream”. If I made this animated film in the late 1950’s or early 1960’s, I would model and cast the two leads based on Annette Funicello and Tommy Sands. (You know, the leads from “Babes in Toyland”? And their singing would be less opera and more rock/n/roll?)

Well anyways, even though this movie is pretty flawed, I’ll always remember this classic for what it is.
