i hope that this baby is going to be a wacky and zany one not a dirty and vulgar one besides if this movie is going to be retro then it better have the characters eyes pop out, jaws drop down and arms and legs stretch and their hearts bulge out and there better be a smoking hot lady because i want dreamworks to make a stunning knockout and prove to me that they do know about beauty

CG emulating 2D in the style of HT seems to be subjective alot in terms of reception, Like AniMat hates the Popeye Clip from Sony and Doug Walker Loves it.

It'll be interesting to see how far they're going with this idea on Boss Baby. Do they just mean stretchiness? Felix the Cat style visual jokes? It's always good when CG uses things like squash & stretch & silhouette the way 2D does, but there's still something special about a hand drawn line, especially with facial expressions. Or when really scratchy imperfect textures happen & give a certain mood. I'm all for moving CG forward but there's still ways to move hand drawn forward too...

Great article though, looking forward to reading more about Annecy!

WRITER'S NOTE: I originally planned to have the remainder of the Annecy 2016 reports be published throughout the week, but due to other news stories occupying the space on our already busy schedule, I just now had a chance to get to them today.

Which is to say, expect more of these reports in the next few days, followed by an after-action recap sometime this weekend or early next week!

From what I have recently seen from the Storks trailer I beg to differ. If done correctly CGI animation can replicate the squash, squish, and stretch style of 2D animation. It all comes down to the rendering of the animation and the pace. Take a look at all we have seen from Storks so and what has been displayed in Hotel Transylvania. Yes, they are both animated by Sony Imageworks but they feel very different. With Storks, the animation is cartoony but much more smoother, and rendered and feel more like a CGI animated film that just so happens to have the movements of a 2D cartoon. With Hotel Transylvania, the animation is cartoony but not fully rendered and the pace of the animation feels less smooth and feels more like a CGI animated film trying to mimicking a 2D animated film and not that well.

You can have a CGI animated film translate 2D animation movements it just needs to be done well and it all depends on the execution and we have no idea how Boss Baby will execute it yet. Let's wait and see.

I have a feeling in my gut that this won't happen. I somehow doubt it. Don't know why.

But you also have brilliant realistic-sometimes cartooney animation from non Disney things like Watership Down, Animal Farm, and Secret of NIMH.

But I side with AniMat. The hand drawn style doesn't translate well to the computer.
