I feel like, if Spielberg and Lucas weren't behind Temple of Doom, the PG-13 rating wouldn't have been created. It was Spielberg's complaining that got the MPAA on its feet. If it were anybody but Spielberg, the Association probably would have told them to go home and quit whining. But, as it turns out, Spielberg changed movie ratings forever.

(I'm aware that this comment has almost nothing to do with the conversation at hand. But who cares?)

Thanks so much! I think it's a double edged sword in many ways because it both marginalizes all animation as for only children and it assumes things made for kids is a bad thing. Kids are awesome! :)

Brilliant article, Rachel! You're not exaggerating the problem at all. If I hadn't have found an animation community too I would be stuck with people thinking I'm into "kid movies".

Thanks so much! That made my day and I agree with you about Curious George. Some of these movies are released in theater but more designed to make their profits back at home. Perhaps they belong on Disney Junior or other childcentric tv networks instead of in theaters but I agree with you it's a good experience for kids to have, and for families to all be able to go to the theater together.

Indeedy, I don't think Pixar, Disney and company are held back by being family entertainment. The greatest art is born of limitations. Michalangelo painted the Sistine Chapel ceiling on his aching back with burning eyes.

I would like to see more animation for toddlers as well. Being among the first movies youngsters see is a privlege, it shoudlnt' be seen as opportunity to be lazy. Winnie the Pooh, as you noted, along with say, Curious George show you can make a very gentle movie and still have wit, a good plot, and memorable characters. However, neither of those films did that well and therein lies the problem.

Great article, Rachel! Ten bucks says this is a contender for one of the best Rotoscoper articles of 2016 awards.

Oh, I LOVE the 1960 Time Machine! It was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid, for all the reasons Baymax mentioned :) In fact, it's still one of my favorite sci-fi movies. It is much, MUCH better than the 2002 film version :) And I had such a crush on the leading lady! I still think she's gorgeous :)

But yeah, the G rating was pretty wonky in the 1960s and early 1970s :) Here are some other "family" movies that got the G rating: Planet Of The Apes, True Grit, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Green Berets, and The Andromeda Strain. And Jaws only got a PG rating :) (But, in fairness, the poster did say that the film "may be too intense for younger viewers.")

Good quote. The only problem I have is if an audience ends up underserved because of perceived stigma or an attempt to please everyone.

I was trying to figure out a way to tie the following statement from one of my favorite television writers into this article with a nice, big post, but I can't think of a way to do so. Instead, I'll just post the statement and the source.

"But mostly -- fundamentally -- I write and edit for a core audience of
one, i.e. ME. I produce the show I'd like to see. If you don't like
