Enjoying the podcast. I have to disagree with the theory that Avatar caused the film to fail. Both films didnt have the same audience. Avatar was for the SCIFI action adventure audience(mostly men and boys). While TPATF was for families, children, and females. If anything the two films that hurt this film was Twilight New Moon and Chipmunks. Since both films took out TPATF audience. Twilight took the females and Chipmunks took the families and children.

To play devils advocate. The original Grimme Fairy Tale that both the book Frog Princess and the film is based on. Didnt have the princess turn into the Frog.

The book the movie is based on has the princess (who is white) turned into a frog for most of it. (It's actually called The Frog Princess) No matter her race, she was going to be a frog.

Checking in from Denmark with an elaboration on your fact on the show that "Firefly Five Plus Lou" is a nod to "Firehouse Four and Two" in Disney Land. Well, being from Denmark I've never had the chance to go to Disney Land, so I have to take your word for there being a band of that name over there. :) But rather than being a nod to a Disney Land-band, the appearance of "Firefly Five Plus Lou" is an homage to the Dixieland jazz band "Firehouse Five Plus Two", active from 1949-1972. The band consisted of members of the Walt Disney Studios animation department - among others esteemed Disney Legends and members of "The Nine Old Men", Frank Thomas (piano) and Ward Kimball (trombone). It was actually a pretty popular band back in those days, so there really was some serious talent on several levels in those Disney corridors! :) I haven't been able to verify the trombonist in the movie scene as Ward Kimball, but it unmistakably is Frank Thomas rocking the piano. :D Ron Clements was a two-year apprentice of Frank Thomas' becoming an animator so this is all an homage to Thomas and his good ol' Disney-members-jazz-band! :)
... And just another fun fact: In the ball scene where Charlotte is dancing with the fake Prince Naveen, chaos and cacophony breaks out and food flies through the air resulting in the Fenner Brothers being covered in cake so that they come to look just like John Musker and Ron Clements - a little wink from the animators to their directors. ;)

I really enjoy this movie, but I know it has its flaws.I think my favorite part of the film was the message. Many films emphasize the importance of hard work and pursuing your dreams, but not many encourage taking a step back and enjoying life along the way. As a college student, I sometimes forget that so this movie always gives me that little reminder. In my opinion it's a simple message, but none the less important.

Agree with your points about the first AA princess being an animal for the majority of the film. Big let down. Also, making the "shadow men" magical, instead of spiritual (and therefore downright evil and malicious) was a poor choice.

I know I am kind of late to this, but whatever. I don't think this film is as bad as everyone here is saying, but there are some issues. As someone who indentifies themselves as black, I did not have an issue with how they were portrayed in the film, and it was kind of obvious that Disney was going to use the whole "frog" thing as a major plot and marketing point for the film. The biggest issue I had with the film is that the villain did not have a connection with Tiana whatsoever. Overall, it has the same flaws as Frozen.
