Thanks. I definitely will watch it. It’s been on my list for a while. And you are totally right about Studio Ghibli having more than just the supernatural/fantasy. Some of the more grounded films are in my favorites.

Yeah I think you are right on with the cultural difference on the romance. And I also agree that I think this one might grow on me with more watches. Kaguya was the same way.

I strongly suggest you to watch From Up on Poppy Hill. As good as Only Yesterday: It’s a movie with a similar taste, and a very similar feeling.

Althought most of the people associate Ghibli with fantasy/supernatural movies, several of its films are more drama/romance – oriented (like Only Yesterday, From Up on Poppy Hill, WHisper of the Heart, The Wind Rises and When Marmie was There) and they are as great as any fantasy Ghibli movie.

Up on Poppy Hill is one of my favorite Studio Ghibli movies. It’s very different from Spirited Away or Ponyo, but still a nice, sweet film nevertheless. Kind of like Whisper of the Heart. Great review!

I need to see Up on Poppy Hill. I think you are right on with Only Yesterday. It’s a nice, sweet little movie. I find with all of Takahata’s films they improve with each rewatch and I wouldn’t be surprised if that is the case with Only Yesterday. I liked it but I bet I will grow to love it the more I see it.
