A presumably never finished song by Alan Menken for Frozen when it was still called the Snow Queen. So totally different in tone.

Fantastic list, and I definitely agree that “If I Never Knew You” always belonged in “Pocahontas” as one of the most underrated Disney love ballads. A few of my other favorite deleted Disney gems are:
1.) “Brothers All” from “The Jungle Book”. Conceived as part of the earlier darker version of “The Jungle Book”, this song (written and performed by Terry Gilkyson who gave us “The Bare Necessities”) has an almost “Circle of Life” feel to it, and honestly could have been a great song to put over the opening credits to the film though it would have clashed with the overall comedic and free-wheeling tone of the final film. 2.) “Love Can’t Be Denied” from “Frozen”. Being one of the many anticipating the upcoming release of the at the time in-production “Frozen”, I would scour YouTube for days looking for any kind of demo recordings of upcoming songs. By complete happenstance, I came upon this gem right before I went to see the re-release of “Beauty and the Beast” in 3D. Apparently written by Alan Menken during “The Snow Queen” era of Frozen’s production (when it supposedly was still to be traditionally animated), this love ballad performed by Bryan D’Arcy James is short and sweet. No clue if this would have been sung by Kristoff to Anna, or by the fairy tale’s original hero (Kai) to his true love (Gerda). Even with the addition of the fantastic songs that we eventually got from Robert and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, I almost wish that this song could have found its way and be expanded upon. “Frozen 2” perhaps? 3.) “As Long As There’s A Moon” and “In A Place of Miracles” from “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”. Both songs serve the same purpose and both were deleted for the same reason. Serving as songs for the budding romance between Phoebus and Esmeralda, Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale decided that the songs took too much focus away from Quasimodo, and thus were removed. “In A Place Of Miracles” got a second life on the recent off-Broadway show and cast album of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”, where it was expanded to include Quasimodo’s reprise of “Heaven’s Light” and for him to reflect upon losing Esmeralda (really sad stuff here). Out of the two, I actually prefer “As Long As There’s A Moon” which almost has a “Kiss The Girl” feel to it with Clopin as our master of ceremonies bringing the two lovers together. Favorite lyric “As Long As There’s A Moon”: “None of us are truly solitaries, every moon is new when someone cares. I will care for you, As long as there’s a moon.”

4.) Original “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” Demo from “The Lion King”. Not so much a deleted song, as an alternate take on a classic. This was the version of the song that Elton John envisioned when he wrote it. A sweeping love ballad between Simba and Nala with no Timon and Pumbaa involvement (although the video I’ve included does include the Timon and Pumbaa only version as well). This version is probably most well known to those of us who owned the 1993 videocassette of “The Fox and The Hound” which contained a trailer for the in-production film. No idea if this was sung by Joseph Williams and Sally Dworsky (who performed the final song in the film as Simba and Nala respectively), but this remains my utmost favorite rendition of the song. 5.) “Warthog Rhapsody” from “The Lion King”. The precursor to “Hakuna Matata” and included on “The Lion King” inspired by music album: “Rhythm of the Pridelands”. This fun and upbeat number is always a joy to listen to, and while “Hakuna Matata” is the superior of the two written as it focused on both Timon and Pumbaa, I still really enjoy it from time to time. No Snuff Out the Light?? Really?

Ever since I saw “If I Never Knew You” in Pocahontas, I can’t see the movie as complete without it. That song is the missing piece to that movie, it makes Pocahontas & John Smith’s relationship feel much more complete. it’s a shame they left it out just because some kids got restless. I also love the “When Will My Life Begin” reprise in Tangled, but I can see how it was difficult to find a place for it in the movie. It made sense for the final reprise to be Rapunzel taking her first steps out into the world instead.

‘Someday’ is an awesome song, but Esmeralda’s rendition of ‘God Help the Outcasts’ in the movie is just amazing. It’s been 20 years now, and I still get goosebumps whenever I listen to it. It’s such a powerful song, and I just can’t imagine the movie without it.

I love that some Sherman Brothers songs that were cut live on in their other work outside of Disney. I would love for Disney to release a Legacy Collection which is just their cut songs.

What’s really aggravating about unused songs at times is when the background score is clearly composed with those ideas still in mind.

It’s no surprise that people often find “If I Never Knew You” one of the most significant losses. Not only is it a decent song in its own right, but the MAIN THEME of the entire score is based on it. While the instrumental music can still work fine without it, when you know it’s supposed to be there, one can’t help but still feel there’s a bit of a disconnect between the songs and background music. You know that song is supposed to sort of cap off and fully realize the theme that’s being built up slowly within the score, and when it isn’t there to do so, something feels wrong.

Hunchback of Notre Dame suffers a bit from that as well, but fortunately not as severely, since “Someday” is only implemented in the score a tiny bit and isn’t as significant as other pieces.
