I actually think that shaun the sheep movie is a great movie that was able to take cartoon characters and make a great movie out of them (the only problem I had in the entire movie was the song "Big City" .

I've been reviewing as many video game movies as possible for my website, so I'll definitely watch this Sonic the Hedgehog movie when it comes out. That said, I don't know if a live-action/CGI hybrid would work. I know Sonic is a recognizable character so a more casual audience will still watch something like this, but I still don't know if that's the best option. Oh and here are the movies I've reviewed so far http://gamesretrospect.com/category/reviews/video-game-movies/

No good will come of this.

The only reasonable "CG/Live action" hybrid film produced was the Chipmunks, and that only worked because it started as a music franchise with no expectation of a story, so the film writers could do pretty much anything.

Video game "films" pretty much doomed to fail from the get-go because they don't offer the audience anything. You can't rehash the plot of the game, comic, or anime, and "Sonic Boom" is kinda failing without any help as it is.

At best they could take all the cutscenes from Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 to use as a storyboard to produce something much more action-film like, but it's far more likely that a film studio is just going to drop Sonic and Robotnik into "our universe" and write something whole-cloth without any of the support characters because that's cheaper.

Sonic X was okay (it's follows Sonic Adventure 1+2's key cutscenes with unnecessary human characters and a lot of filler) but then goes off in it's own direction, ignoring all that came before it.

The original games don't really have any storyline, and the cartoons/comics produced during that era are all bottle-episodes where nothing that happens in them ever gives the characters a purpose, and nothing gets resolved, Robotnik is never truely defeated.

Every "Sonic Game" is pretty much "Find the 7 chaos emeralds, beat up Robotnik every second stage, smash robots to release animals" except for Sonic CD. The 7 emeralds is kinda ripped off from Dragon Ball which has 7 dragon balls, and that in turn is kinda ripped off from Hakkenden (18th century Japanese literature.) The entire Super Sonic and Super Saiyan thing is no coincidence.

Trying to get a film out of that without recognizing the point of sonic is fast action-movement is going to either result in something not terribly exciting, or a really poor 48fps 3D film that gives everyone motion sickness.
