In reply to SwanburneGirl. I loved Inside Out as well. I didn't see the Other Mother flashback coming but I liked Coraline. Good Dinosaur was moving and strikingly animated despite some amateur humor.

In reply to Cecelia. I saw the dad's gonna die thing coming as well. But that bit of Lion King and Bambi Deja vu rolled into one couldn't ruin my enjoyment of the movie that easily.

Pixar tried hiring outside directors in Toy Story 2 and Brave and it didnt work out very well. I think while they still can keeping it in the family is a good idea

It’s weird how unloved The Good Dinosaur is.

Is it Pixar’s best? No.

But if you compare it to the other American animated films this year in my opinion it would rank in the top 3 (with Inside Out ranking number 1).

Pixar is just so good that we tend to criticise more than they probably deserve. Even the Cars films, Monster’s University and Brave copped more than they deserved when they were released.

All of Pixar’s films are extremely rewatchable and entertaining. And even if story lacks it’s still breathtaking watching the visuals onscreen. No other US studio pushes themselves in the technology department like Pixar.

It would be the easy option to go cheap and crank out a bunch of Minion films but Pixar always goes for quality and deserve the respect that comes with that.

I would have loves Bob Peterson’s version of the Good Dinosaur but at the end of the day it wasn’t to be and what we got was really heartfelt and fun and you can’t complain about that.

I wish more people had gone to see it at the cinema and not waited for it on home video and streaming services. It does not deserve to go down as a Pixar dud.

Well, they’re hiring outside writers these days. But that doesn’t mean they should hire directors from elsewhere too. It seems like a pretty close knit company there, and honestly, if my company ever goes huge, I’ll be looking internally to find new directors.
Running a company like that is about helping people accomplish their dreams(as long as their dream has something to do with animation) and the main team at Pixar have the power in their hands to make it happen.

“So, back to The Good Dinosaur. That scene with Arlo and Spot ripped my heart apart. Curiously enough, I was sadder when Spot knocked down those sticks that represented his family that when Arlo’s actual father passed away.”

It was the same for me. I knew the “dad’s gonna die” thing was coming, so that didn’t really tug at my heartstrings. But when Spot pushed those sticks down and buried them, the tears came flowing. Same thing in the end. I was a wreck.
