Nice short podcast! You guys did great and we do miss Mason! Wish there had been voicemails for this one.

I thought the film was ok. I'm not really a mega-fan of any of LAIKA's films so far, although Kubo is looking amazing!

Fun episode! I need to watch this film again to appreciate it more. It's not as dark or twisted as "Coraline" but has some whimsical atmosphere that reminds me of steampunk. Winnie's baby-fat cheeks and red pigtails are part of her character appeal but it's adorable how obsessed she is with thinking the Boxtrolls eat people. I just realized how Laika doesn't heavily market their films with lots of merchandise like Disney or Dreamworks but focusing on their own stories, animation techniques, and budget allows them to hold their ground and offer creative methods in today's animation.

I didn't know about their use of 3D printing or GCI (I'm not a fan of overdone CGI e.g. the "Star Wars" prequels) until you mentioned it. But it works in "Boxtrolls" and I'm sure saved the animators lots of time while still designing a world and characters that look beautifully hand-crafted. A hat with 14 different fabrics! Sounds like high-end fashion to me!
