Rudolph has always been one of my most favorite Christmas specials but it does seem to get wierder the older you get. I’ve always liked the cute reinder, the classic stop motion and the fun songs and the fact that there are talking reindeer (I always loved animal movies, especially talking animal movies as a little girl). But as a grew older I began to notice many of the same kind of messages in this Christmas special that you did and just how mean this Santa was. Now maybe it’s because of all that icky looking food that Mrs. Claus feeds him that makes him cranky (I wouldn’t want to eat that purple/grey food either!).

But I agree that this is one of the most “evil” portrayals of Santa I’ve seen: picking on a little newborn reindeer and his new parents right from the get go and banishing misfit toys to an island of isolation.

But all weirdness, and morals aside, I do really love this movie with Rudolph, Clarice, and Yukon being my favorite characters 🙂
