I usually don't enjoy watching Satoshi Kon's work, but this one I do! If you can handle the stark realism of homeless life and desperation, overall it has a surprisingly optimistic tone, it's a very heartwarming and funny story. I rewatched it the other day after seeing it here.

I remember watching this movie on a quest for all things Anime and agreeing that this is indeed a strange premise for a movie and the plot was all new. But the themes of family, loss, and reuniting with loves ones resonate with audiences. It's a different method of storytelling if you're used to Western animation (I was a bit confused about leaving new diapers and milk at graves) but the core of the story is easy to communicate. And the concept of a child's innocence, a brand new life born, that brightens the lives of three people who have struggled through dark times, is the essense of the Christmas spirit.

I love Satoshi Kon's films, he was a master of creating believable, emotionally-troubled characters. Tokyo Godfathers is one of the funniest anime's I've seen too it has a few laugh out loud moments.

Great article might have to give this one a watch again before christmas!
