I literally just saw it as in Australia it's not out til Boxing Day so I just attended an advanced screening.

And I do not understand any critisism levelled at this film. It's definitely a smaller film than other Pixar films and doesn't hit the heights of some of their great hits but compare this to what other American studios are producing and this is a really solid film.

Given the behind the scenes issues it deserves even more credit for what has been achieved. I was in it from the start and loved sitting back and seeing the stunning visuals and touching story.

Pixar has just done too many good things and it's easy to hold this to that level and see where it doesn't quite make it but compared to Pixar's recent slate (with the obvious exception of Inside Out) it's ranking pretty high. Better than Cars 2, Brave and MU. And probably on par with at least A Bug's Life.

This films response just goes to show that no matter how much you give the world if you stumble a little they'll make sure you know that you have indeed stumbled. We should be supporting this film a whole lot more and showing how much we appreciate and love this studio. I'd take a dozen films of this quality then have to endure another Minions or Madagascar. Pixar is the standard in American Animation and even this tops the majority of its conpetitors films (Disney not included obviously)

I think it is.

The dinosaurs are cartoonish and while I got used to it, I didn't quite accept or like it as I watched the film. I was constantly wondering how Arlo didn't topple from being unbalanced or have one of his legs snap from under his weight besides "children's movie".

The story is reused. That's not anything someone can deny. But there is no movie on earth that does not use something another movie did first. It didn't stop my enjoyment of the film or storyline (mainly because I've found The Lion King rather annoying and Simba's growth was rushed - but that's a comparison for another day), but I can see how someone didn't like it.

It's not as good as Pixar's other work - not all of it. I know that people have had very high standards and praise for Pixar's work in the past, and quite honestly, some of it has baffled me. Outside of a technical and story achievement, emotionally, I don't connect with UP, Wall-E, Toy Story 3, Brave, Inside Out, or Cars 2. Do (most) of those stories work better than TGD? Yes, I can admit that.

But what kind of catalog of stories/movies isn't varied, in both subject matter and quality? It might not be as good, and even if you judge it on its own merits it may fall flat for you, but realize when you're comparing an entire library of films up against the latest one, you kind of already set it up to fail. Judge it on it's own merits and then go "Okay, where does it fit in the library?"

Agreed. That's largely why I wrote the article; I wanted to get people fired up and to get a dialogue going. Really, that's what I'm trying to do every time I write, so this kind of response makes me very happy!

Thanks again for the kind words, Ryan. It's always a pleasure to read what you have to say; your comments are always well-written and well thought-out!

Whats wonderful about the huge internet, it allows us all to communicate our differing opinions. The more people you connect the more likely conflicting opinions you will run into. I think its phenomenal that we can all share our view points. People will get upset when you do that, but for the most part I celebrate it. So thank you charlie for your article. Whatever gets a dialogue going is awesome in my book.
