Great review!

I'm with the group of people who don't really like this film. The photorealistic backgrounds are the only thing I love about this movie! I feel this is the 2nd worst Pixar film ever, but that's not bad as no Pixar film is really horrible.

I confess to automatically having higher expectations from a Pixar film, likely coming from the high of watching “Inside Out”. The characters are fun and quirky (I LOVED the T-Rexes!) and Arlo’s innocence is sweet but I have to agree with Morgan that the villain was weak and unnecessary. I didn’t mind this film being Western or putting the “boy and his dog” theme in reverse; what bothered me was the method of storytelling.

I didn’t think it was necessary for Arlo’s father to be killed off. In some films such as “Big Hero 6”, “The Lion King”, and “Finding Nemo”, a loved ones’ death motivates the protagonist to do something that moves the plot forward (Hiro becomes vengeful, Simba runs away, Marlin becomes overly protective of his son). I suppose Arlo needed to be angry enough with Spot for causing his father’s death for them to get swept away by the river….but it seemed like unnecessary drama. Arlo already had a tough enough goal to get home by overcoming his fear. Adding on the grief of his father, accepting it, and forgiving Spot was a lot to take on.

This movie also reminded me of “The Croods” which I found to
be good but not outstanding. “Croods” encourages overstepping fear without
boundaries; a liability in life. The flipside is the message of “Inside Out”
that demonstrated how even “bad” emotions e.g. fear, anger are necessary in our
lives. I did enjoy the line, “If you’re not scared, you ain’t alive”. Fear is an ongoing part of our lives as we mature. The things that scared us 10 years ago aren’t the same challenges we face today because we are constantly learning and adapting. I think in several years I’ll look back at this movie and realize it isn’t as bad as it seems. And it isn’t even bad at all. It’s good; just not outstanding.

The movie was very enjoyable to me. The trippy hallucination part was random for me at first but once I started thinking about it, it really plays well with the how nature is dangerous. It doesn't have to be just storms or predators. Being careful what you consume is just as detrimental. It feels very much like a classic Walt Disney film.

Same here, funnily enough, they marketed this movie better than Inside Out, yet, when it came to the movie itself: it's like three movies poorly squished together into one. A father and son movie, A boy and his dog movie and a western. I suppose that Dinosaurs keeping mammals and other bird and mammal wildlife is symbolic of Dinosaur's being advanced after the meteor hit hence T-Rex's having cattle and Apatosaurus' having Chickens (somewhat similar to Zootopia). But unlike Zootopia, there was a lack of research of the Dinosaur's themselves. Wouldn't it been so much more epic if Arlo was a T-Rex or a Sabre Tooth Tiger that was scared of everything and befriending Arlo as opposed to a gummy bear variation of Littlefoot we have right now?

I totally agree, and it's such a shame cos I was really looking forward to TGD. It ended up being alright, but it could've been SO much better! I also don't understand why a bunch of Apatosaurus are keeping chickens and why there's hardly any other dino species around.

Really good episode. I'll still stick to my 3.5 rating but who knows? Could change for better (or worse) in repeat viewings. Apparently film isn't doing so well at the cinema right now though.. =[

Cars is an exception because the very premise of the movie's universe is baffling. John Lasseter would need a miracle to save Cars 3. But back to The Good Dinosaur, I really feel as though people are defending it because it's "Pixar".
