As many of us know, the started film wasn't originally a Pixar film, Pixar Canada, Pixar's new sister studio, made it and it was so awful it was shut DOWN. The entire studio was terminated after one film, everyone at that studio lost their job for making Good Dinosaur. Consequently, we didn't really have a Pixar film. We have Pixar's attempt at salvaging a failure by another studio and that's a different thing. I saw it last week, I enjoyed t somewhat but it was painful in a way.

I just saw the movie off of DVD Netflix tonight and I thought it was moving and beautifully animated. I don't consider to be masterpiece material like Inside Out or the Peanuts Movie. The humor was a bit amateurish than what we usually get with Pixar anywhere in the opening credit. The dialogue free moments would have been a little better with a narrator to combine with the evocative music. Overall, another not great but striking if cheesy film from the creators of Toy Story.

I will admit that nature could've just been the main antagonist and some of the villains such as the pterodactyls didn't really need to be the bad guys, but it was still cool to see Arlo take them on.

Generally speaking, you're right. Great movie. But the thing is, Pixar prides on their formula, and this time around, it hasn't worked on their behalf. I commend Peter Sohn for making the right choices in terms of the narrative about overcoming fear, however, there's so many sub-narratives that it kind of gets in the way of the overall story. I actually prefer Monsters Inc over this for two reasons. Firstly, all the characters that have attention are vital to the plot. The Good Dinosaur threw in unwanted villains just to better fit the "western" motif which was not needed. And as far as the villains go, nature itself would have been good enough to be the main villain. If Inside Out had no backlash by not having a villain then The Good Dinosaur could have done the same.
