It would be a desire come true for me (and everyone in the animation community as a whole) seeing traditional 2D animation make a true comeback to mainstream cinema, but at the same time, I feel that we should evolve its visual palette and capabilities to revolutionise it for a new generation, and of course, deliver a solid and profitable concept. Hopefully, big studios (particularly Disney) will pick up the new ideas that Kariba and Klaus bring to the table, and decide to finally open the doors for 2D animation again.

The 'saving grace' for hand-drawn animation in the US would have to be two things.

One, it needs to be from a western studio. Theoretically, there have been plenty of opportunities for a foreign animated feature to change the tide here in the US. So far, no results. The US industry is more likely to be swayed by a homegrown effort.

Two, that film would need to reach Frozen levels of popularity in order to move the industry back into hand-drawn. This still remains a lofty, ambitious, and unobtainable goal for anyone hoping to jumpstart the medium again.

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but I think hand drawn animation is only dead when it comes to feature length films--a lot of cartoons and anime are still mostly hand drawn. Anime especially still relies on hand drawn key animation, but anime, since it's made for TV, doesn't have the fluidity that hand drawn Western animation is known for (Studio Ghibli being the major exception). I think it's entirely possible that the saving grace of hand drawn animation isn't going to come from a major Western studio. Thoughts?

I'm a huge fan of anime, disney/pixar & co. When I have seen Little Witch Academia 2, few days ago, I loved it a lot!!! Same for the Little Mermaid or The Beauty and The Beast or the Song of the Sea and so many more. For me, there is no difference of quality between a 2D movie and a 3D movie! I'm still wondering why everyone says that 2D is dead -when anime market grows up in western countries x)! It's really sad!

3D or 2D can be really awesome!! I don't have a favorite because I just want a great story and an awesome art *^* The style and the 2D or 3D doesn't matter!
I heard "Disney shuts down 2D because Princess and the frog was not good in term of audience" (if I understand it right >ww<
