Part of Hugo’s novel is all about Esmeralda’s origin story. She isn’t really a “gypsy” at all. This is a misconception. Her bio-mom was a French prostitute and her father was a nobleman. Quasimodo is actually the real “gypsy”, his bio-parents are gypsies and they swapped him when they kidnapped Esmeralda. She was then raised as a gypsy.

If you like melodrama, this is a book you should read. Quasimodo is the true gypsy and there is irony in Claude Frollo’s love/hate relationships with this band of people.

Just to clarify. This film is not being made by Disney and their are no plans for a ‘Hunchback of Notre Dame’ live-action film at current.

This version will be based on the book, which didn’t end happily.

Knowing Disney it will probably still end happily. That’s what happened in Maleficent and she was originally the villain. Or IS the villain if you prefer the older cartoon version.

In reply to Tim Tran. I read somewhere that Romani people originated from India. So the casting of a woman of north (east?) indian descent would be the second best thing, but of course I'd prefer a Romani actress

I think this is a great thing to see! I am really curious about another version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame since I only have seen Disney’s version and then a movie version of it with Dumbledore in it
