In reply to <a href="https://www.rotoscopers.com/2015/11/04/watch-this-heartwarming-first-clip-from-pixars-the-good-dinosaur/#comment-22820">Baymax</a>.

It's a nice scene on its own (and it does feel reminiscent of The Lion King like Rob Bob pointed out earlier), but I don't know, it seems as though it's a bit too expositional and/or "on the nose" in the context of what will apparently happen later in the movie. It's like "Here is the exact point we're trying to make, neatly spelled out for easy, unchallenging understanding, and what do you know, here comes a perfect example to put it to the test, right on cue--how convenient!" ;)

I realize this is hard to completely avoid in any movie that has a specific point to make, although it is possible to be more subtle about it, keep the audience guessing, or save it for the end (which would preclude a scene like this, but there are other options). One way or another, really good movies tend to keep us guessing, despite all of the setup that is needed to support their themes, and frankly this is not what I got from Pixar's last movie, Inside Out, and now I wonder about The Good Dinosaur (although I will still strive to be fair, as this is just one scene taken out of context, and it is a nice one).

As for children needing to be scared at times, as well as the notion of overcoming one's fear, I'm all for it in regard to general-audience movies, but I want to be shown rather than told. We'll see what The Good Dinosaur is really like soon enough--hopefully the feeling I just got is wrong.

I was half expecting the father dinosaur to say "And don't worry. I will not die two scenes from now and scar an entire generation of children"

this scene is very motivating. i myself have many uncommon "silly" fears, and i feel as if im arlo facing them and discovering "the beauty on the other side". I is a rare occasion when fear is talked about in children's entertainment. but..... I cannot find the quote i wanted to copy and paste, but a summary is that:

"It is unhealthy for kids to not be scared. YOU NEED TO BE SCARED AT LEAST ONCE!!!"
-Jim Henson on the Dark Crystal

which is reasonable. a little. i feel fine now. im gonna go to bed. also a shoutout to animat, cellspex, lewtoons, supercarlinbrothers, any of dolan's channels (danger dolan, super planet dolan), and that channel with the weird name that makes disney movies with cats dont dance. LOVE YA'LL
