I thought about Watership Down but decided it was more gory and bloody than scary but you will definitely see it if I do future lists

Hmmm. It's an interesting point. I do find Spirited Away to be scary with No Face and Yobaba and Chihiro trying to get out and bring her parents back from being pigs (the scariest thing in the film I will agree). I think there is an overall sense of peril and tension in Spirited Away that makes up for maybe the individual frights you get in other films.

That said I do agree Paranorman is very scary. No doubt about it!

Are you confusing Best Animated Scary Films with Scariest Animated Films? Because Spirited Away, really isn't that scary at all(except maybe the parents to pigs sequence), and Paranorman probably has the most scariest sequence of all the films you listed.
Although I am glad you put the headless horseman in there, I could barely watch that as a kid :)

I've never read the graphic novel, but I can guarantee you the full novel is just as good if not better.

I wonder if part of it is when they go for scary they can be a little bit bolder artistically than other more limiting genres? I think kids like the films because it helps them feel more grown up and adults too.
