I agree that it was rather well done--even better than I was willing to hope. My only real quibble is that the negative aspects, which were all true to the best of my knowledge, were sometimes emphasized without some of the qualifications that I'm aware of. But that's nicely balanced with sections that played up just how genuine Walt's passion and drive were. In short, they amped things up just a little bit, but what's important is that the end effect is that Walt truly came across as a real person, even to casual viewers I'd imagine--larger than life compared to the rest of us, to be sure, but sympathetic even in his foibles and surprisingly (well, not to me, but I mean in general) relatable. It was his failings as much as his genius that allowed him to create what he did, which makes this a very human story, and hopefully those creations themselves will seem more real to those who watched this program.

This is so refreshing compared to how so many Disney (and especially Disneyland) "fans" these days keep cynically reiterating that Walt was a shrewd and cunning businessman, as though he were P.T. Barnum or something, when the truth is that the man himself was in most respects anything but that. If he's such a phony, then why are they fans? At least those who do actual research into his life and work--like the people who made this program--know better, and hopefully a decent number of viewers now do, too.

Thank you so much for this article, I wouldn't have known about this documentary otherwise! I watched, and boy it was good! I didn't necessarily agree with everything, but I think they did a great job! I cried like a baby 3 times: when Walt realized he succeeded in making people feel emotional with Snow White, when he came up with the idea for Disneyland and of course when he died... What an amazing personal journey and what a legacy he left behind!

It's good to see that the filmmaker recognizes the genuine side of Walt's otherwise fictional public persona, and hopefully this comes through in the documentary itself. Walt was only human like the rest of us, having faults and demons like anyone else, and it's important for people to know this if they want to understand him and what he and his company created, but at the same time Walt really believed in what he was doing and creating. Making money was important, but for Walt it was much more of a means than an end, helping to realize what both his inner child and his demons (e.g. his authoritarian, stifling father and his mother's tragic death that Walt blamed himself for) drove him to create. I think that the uninitiated will find him more interesting than they probably expect.
