The “parents” storyline, that didn’t appear in the final version, was originally going to be in a different version of the film that was in the tone of “Prince of Egypt”. As in…straight dramatic. I heard that from a Tom Sito interview from the Animation Blog.

My opinion on Chris Farley as Shrek: Well…it’s nice but I’m more glad that Mike Myers got cast instead.

I know this particular film change occurred out of tragedy, but it is very interesting to see how a voice can change so much about a story. Just by losing their actor, a whole new Shrek emerged. I also know that when Mike Myers originally recorded his lines he did them with no accent, then had him add it later. I have known about this particular history of Shrek but actually hearing it makes it that much more interesting. It would be so interesting to hear all the lines recorded.
