Well, the original ending is more of bittersweet rather than sadistic, if you leave the blackmail element out (which if you ask me is on the same level as saying Santa Claus only brings good kids gifts) I don’t know if you’ve actually read it or just heard it somewhere, if you haven’t then I definitely recommend reading the original fairy tale to understand the context. And Disney actually planned on making it sadder when he tried to adapt it in the ’40s by leaving out the part where she becomes a sylph.

I do think it would be a good idea to add some elements of the original fairy tale to the movie, although I agree that being too faithful could be disastrous.
