I understand that you and Fadi have an opinion. Please express it without name-calling.

Fadi’s right, trolls. I do pay attention to critical response when I know it’s thoughtful and often mirrors my own taste. Not all media is bad media. Why shell out for theater tickets when I can wait and watch at home, like John Carter, like should have done for Lone Ranger…

That being said, I’m not sure Tomorrowland flopped due to an original story/IP. I’d say it was much more likely the result of a few other things:

1) The film was not fantastic. It had some serious pacing issues, editing problems, and tried to be too many things. If it was sci-fi adventure, it didn’t go far enough. If it was family friendly fun, it was too serious.

2) It released around WAY too many big-name blockbusters. Sandwiching yourself between The Avengers and Jurassic Park is essentially asking for failure. Not the fault of anyone but the team that set the release date.

3) The message was extraordinarily heavy-handed, and not one anybody wants to hear. When the villain laments “You have both an epidemic of obesity AND people in the world starving” that is spot-on accurate. You know who doesn’t want to hear that? Obese people, who are on the “winning” end of that equation. The film does a bang-up job at shining a light on the horrors of our world, and how stupid we act so much of the time, and to think that popcorn eating movie goers would be interested in having that thrown in their face would be foolish. People don’t want to hear about how they need to get their act together. They’d rather watch robots fight other robots.

All in all I’m very glad I went to see Tomorrowland. It had some brilliant moments and a SUPERB setup and concept. It’s a shame it didn’t live up to that concept, but they can’t all be The Iron Giants or Incredibles. 🙂

Yeah, and when viewing The Iron Giant, that movie is a beautiful animated film. Goes to show people don’t know what’s good and enjoy the bad. Sometimes the best movies never do good at the box office. An that’s been going on since the birth of cinema.
