Diversity, I think, is a very good thing to keep in mind. It doesn’t even need to ‘affect’ the story line, really. We should just have characters of different races. Take, for example Mickey Smith, in Doctor Who. (I would use the example of Martha Jones, but I haven’t gotten to Series 3 yet :P) He was black. No one ever made a big deal about it (not to my memory, at least) He wasn’t a token. He was a character first and foremost. He happened to be black. Awesome! Diversity! But it’s subtle diversity, not shoved down your throat. And quite frankly, if they can present racial issues in a clever, original, non-preachy way (because they do need to be addressed), then by all means, Lasseter, go for it! Just remember, we want diverse people, not tokens. 🙂

There are great stories everywhere. This just means the film makers will be looking outside of their own lives to find them. How long did it take for Pixar to create a film with a female protagonist? 20 years?
If we keep saying “I don’t care”, then we’ll never get past the great difference in female led characters, female directors and female CEOs. You could say diversity starts in the media, and with animation directed to children, we need to make sure we mould their minds accordingly.

The world is more than one color and the point of diversity is not being tolerant or trendy, but being realistic (assuming the story is set in a more mixed area in a more modern era). Having a mixed ensemble in a film won’t hurt the story, it’ll be exactly the same story if the skin colors were all the same. If the story is poor it won’t be due to increased diversity, it’ll be the writing.
