I will counter with this: it had been years since Astrid encountered the Flightmare as a young child, and she was obviously not ready to face it back then. While its possible that she could have faced it on her own, it also would have been likely that pieces of either her or the Flightmare would have been scattered across Berk (depending on who was the victor).

So for better or worse, Astrid was smart in enlisting the help of someone who not only knew dragons, but could also cut pass the rivalries and figure out a way to drive out the Flightmare without any casualties.

Once again, Astrid could have gone the route of the lone wolf against the Flightmare, but clearing up her family name would have been a lot harder without looking at how this dragon works and inventing a solution out of that.

I have a bone to pick with the episode called "Fright of Passage". It was supposed to be "Astrid's episode", about to focus on Astrid's journey into clearing her family name from the "freezing dragon". And then, in the second act, the writers chickened out. They swerved away from focus on Astrid and focused on the dragons becoming "neon-colored" to defeat the "freezing dragon". Man, this episode was supposed to be about Astrid and her goal to conquer what wronged her family's name. And in the end, it turned out to be Hiccup, Astrid and Fishlegs' goal to make the dragons glow. And Hiccup, kinda stole the thunder from Astrid. Ugh...Didn't they watch "Anastasia"? Anya confronts Rasputin and is about to lose, but then Dimitri comes in and tries to help her, but after a wild ride and being knocked out, thanks to a bump to the head from a demonic Pegasus, Anya goes all "girl power" and kills Rasputin. If only Astrid was in that position, without killing the dragon.

Man, season two sure had some great episodes. My favorite were 'Fright of Passage' (for the slight Hiccstrid X3) and A View to A Skrill just for showing the Skrill at long last. It has to be my favorite dragon next to Toothless. :)
