Update on reaction: Silently (and sullenly) hands me the DVD. "I did not expect that." Agrees to watch Kaguya, Song of the Sea and Watership Down before turning to a corner broodingly. I'm not sure whether to comfort her or gently point out the victory.

Animation will always be treated with more respect outside the U.S as long as the average American forever brands it in the "kiddie ghetto." Yet 3D animated films often rival or surpass live action fare @ the box office. And with such events as Comic Con getting more mainstream every year, the attitude is changing. Whether one thinks it's enough or not, when the Academy Awards finally added a best feature length animation & animated short category it was a big step in public acknowledgement of animation's contribution to cinema.

For those who think animation is easy to do because they have an image of Dexter or Fred Flintstone stuck in their heads I say, well go ahead & try to draw Pocahontas from memory & then try to turn her around consistently. Go on.. I'll wait...

1 thing is wring in this article. They never say "I can’t believe that someone as old as you still watches animation", they say "I can’t believe that someone as old as you still watches cartoons". Its to the point that now whenever I hear the word cartoon, I reject it like some kind of racial slurs against animation.
And add to the fact that the Oscars called animation a genre just this year.
I always use these arguments, but they never work. Anyone who thinks animation is for kids and not interested in films won't be persuaded. I tried way too hard.

I really like your 1st point. Animation can definitely expand the setting out of what live action can do. Well, more like what live action can do without stepping on uncanny valley and fake-looking CG and human interactions (the example as inside human body is accurate, since animation can make that place look colorful and beautiful, but live action will definitely step on grossness and disgustingness).

Great article btw.

Haha yeah! People who do like animation, but because of the same stereotypes said by haters. Those are even more difficult to deal with! Specially awkward if both types of people engage in the same conversation D:
