In regards to your point on Cinderella being "traditional" and the whole anti-feminist debacle:

As a feminist, I can say that there's absolutely nothing wrong with who Cinderella is! She's strong and feminist in her own way (by the way, being a feminist doesn't mean embracing masculinity). She's a woman with her own agency and she is who she is and she makes her own choices. There is nothing wrong with being domestic or anything of the sorts.

However, I think the complaints regarding Cinderella isn't because of who she is or what her values are, it's because of the narrative itself. In the movie industry, we lack diversity and representation, in regards to race, gender identity (i.e. not cisgendered), gender expression, sexual orientation, age, ability (or rather, disability), and personality (which ties in which gender expression. The complaint directed at Cinderella is that it offers no new narrative and presents the same portrayal of a woman that Hollywood and Disney has regurgitated again and again.

Sure, we are slowly but surely getting more representation from Disney with Mulan and Merida and Elsa and Gogo Tomago, but all that is shadowed in comparison to the same trope of female characters.

For example, say there's a spectrum of personality and gender expression with "feminine" being on one end and "masculine" on the other. And let's disassociate both forms of expression with gender; a masculine woman does not mean she is behaving or dressed "like a man"; and vice versa with a feminine man. A vast majority of female characters are on the far "feminine" side, with only a select being in the middle or on the "masculine" side. Same goes for male portrayal, except reverse.

The problem here is a tired narrative with lack of representation of all the rest of the types of women (and men, trans*, intersex, genderfluid, and gender non-conforming) in the media.

The problem is that the constant single type of portrayal of women (and men) as a whole creates an ideal and thus enforces rigid, heteronormative gender roles.

I look forward to the day when we see stories and fairy tales of a feminine guy who's domestic and dreams of going to the ball to meet his princess or prince or a girl who rejects the domestic, settled family life and ventures around the world and explores and discovers and is self-driven. I look forward to the days where every single person on and off the spectrum are represented equally and everyone's story is heard.

(Not to mention there are different ways of being feminine and masculine; for instance, I consider myself feminine, but I have a pixie and wear boots with most things.)

Sorry for the long post! :)

The film did indeed stay true to the source material and its 1950 animated counterpart, and it wasn't an attempt to twist the storyline a bit further. What it did is just adding layers to characters' background & story arcs, whether it was Cinderella's relationship with her parents, Lady Tremaine's cruel desires deepens, and the Prince's motivations throughout the film. The visuals and cinematography stood out beautifully (as much as Disney's recent animation to live action adaptation had been), I wasn't too critical toward the CG effects as it didn't detract too much from important plot moments, particularly scenes with the Fairy Godmother. When Cinderella's dress transformed, I had goosebumps when moments like these shows how well known and beloved the fairytale and the 1950 classic. Having said that, Cinderella is a wonderfully crafted film for a new generation with plenty of heart, a bit of humor, and (of course) magic to go along for the ride to the ball.

Did anyone stay until the end of the credits? Because I thought the fairy godmother saying "Where did everybody go?" when the theater was empty was adorable. I really liked how this movie doesn't try to give the fairy tale any dark twists, it just gives us the story we all know and love.
It's very good for the occasional easter egg, such as how Cinderella sings "Sing Sweet Nightingale" when she goes to get the egg from a chicken in the beginning. Also good for Nostalgia seeing the scenes we all know come to life. It was also so beautiful and I loved the first dance, my sister got so into it that she clapped along with the background actors. I was squeeling right next to her. Also found it interesting how Jaq became a Jaqueline. Speaking of the mice, I like how they weren't in it TOO much like the animated version but Lucifer was missed.

Oh and I liked the Frozen Short more than I expected, all the little snowmen were adorable!

The main reason I saw Cinderella today was for Frozen Fever (Which I enjoyed), but I happily ended up liking Cinderella a lot more than I thought I would! I was expecting more of a major retelling of the story like in Maleficent (which I didn't care for). As @disqus_JGHV7y49hO:disqus said, It's great that the remake stayed true to the source material. Although I still much rather prefer the original Cinderella from 1950, I had a good time at the movies with this one and I think it's worth a Blu-ray buy. I also was glad they included the songs they did in the credits!

I saw this movie last night and thought it was wonderful! I wouldn't change anything about it except for the two coachmen. I don't consider it a spoiler, but I won't say why just in case. But if you have seen the movie, you will know why. They just felt really out of place and really killed the mood in all the scenes they were in. I don't know who thought it was a good idea to include them the way they were included. Otherwise, I though the movie was great. That was really my only complaint
