I only saw the 1st half of Shrek like Matthew Koh, but loved it. This ep is probably one of the funniest in the podcast’s run, in my opinion. (Why are you all so awesome) And thanks for including my (inexperienced) voicemail!! Keep up the great work!

I totally agree with the point you guys made about having to “be there” to really appreciate and love Shrek. I was probably ten-ish when this came out and I remember driving in the car with my younger siblings and actually watching it on VHS on a bulky “travel size” TV/VCR combo on long trips! We grew up with fairy tales and the classic Disney films so we definitely appreciated the humor as well. My family loves and still loves this movie. My husband bought me the entire 4-pack of DVDs and I’m kinda thinking I will save Shrek for the next ten years when my 2 year old son is old enough to “get it”! 🙂
P.S. My husband and I exited our wedding ceremony to Accidentally in Love inspired by Shrek 2!
Shrek IS life.

I agree with the Rotoscopers about the obsession to make “anti-fairy tales” getting redundant after “Shrek” came out. “Shrek” was the first and original so I remember what a hit sensation it was. But all of the knockoffs can get weary and the pop culture references date the film. (Dare I compare “High School Musical” to “The Sound of Music”?) I did enjoy the sequel…including Antonio Banderas reinventing his “Zorro” persona as Puss in Boots.

I’m so glad to hear that Glen Keane chose to make “Tangled” as a traditoinal Disney fairy tale with 21st century storytelling and animation instead of making it a “no damsel in distress” mission. Rapunzel is no warrior but she is capable, forward, and likable–and I adore her for it. (Also because I’m learning to knit just like her ^^)

I remember my dad ripping off a rented DVD of Shrek for no reason. It was one of the first movies we saw on DVD. Unfortunately, it ripped only the first half of the movie. It only ends with Fiona singing, and I have no memory of the second half.

I think Shrek is absolutely awful. When you parody something it works best if it comes from a place of fondness, but there’s a sinister and mean spirited tone to Shrek re: Disney. It is specifically anti Disney too. Jeffrey Katzenberg’s bitter fallout with the company makes the motivation obvious.

More importantly, it doesn’t stand the test of time at all thanks to the dated songs, pop culture references, and humor sensibility that the public has thankfully moved on from. This style haunted DreamWorks films for years. Thankfully they’ve broken away somewhat for HTTYD and Kung Fu Panda.

Shrek- revisiting the film, just in the podcast, I remember how much I love this movie. Still not a big fan of the gross-out content. I give it 4 starts.
