Pixar has had great success with their original directors, Lassiter, Stanton, Doctor, and now they are trying to train a new generation of directors. Catmull has done a great job shepherding the original leaders, we shall see how they do in the future. It’s not assured they will be able to transition. The original leaders went through fire and thought through literally every aspect to get to where they are. The new guys don’t have that heritage.

I’m glad someone finally said what I was thinking. My reaction was simply “oh no”. Not that I have a thing against Pixar trying something new (for them at least), but because we already have something similar. I’m sure their approach would be totally different — and if it is, it could be better. I mean, I liked The Book of Life, but love it? Sadly no. I’m willing to give Pixar a chance with this if that’s the route they choose.

I don’t know what Pixar’s movie was going to be about, but The Book of Life, which was much longer in the making, kind of stole its thunder in terms of holiday theme, obviously, while WDAS’ Big Hero 6 just recently covered the coming to terms with bereavement and grief angle rather thoroughly, if Pixar’s movie was ever going to focus on that. Not that these can’t be used, but anytime soon may not be the best time for it unless it can, as you say, be made different enough to stand out.

Lol your grasping here. One of your points is actually Cars 2 being the first flop for pixar. If your gonna argue that they’re always trying new things you could at least have said it focused on sidekick character or something but no you went with flop. Nice. As for Brave yea their first crack at fairytale yes but it’s been done by plenty times by other studios not ground breaking stuff. And with Monsters University, I consider myself to be more than a casual fan and I could care less about a lighting system. If it’s not noticeably enhancing my experience then it has little value. Got any other points?

I do agree that Pixar should lay off the sequels. They used to be known for their own ideas and willingness to push the envelope. That is what made Pixar well-liked in the ’90s and 2000s. I hope “Inside Out”, “The Good Dinosaur”, and the “Dia de los Muetros” movie will bring back the greatness the studio once had.

At least you still see Pixar’s creativity with both animation and technology in their original shorts.

“Brave” is Pixar’s first fairy tale. While that isn’t anything new in general, it was the first time the studio tackled the genre.

“Monsters University” didn’t do anything new with story, but it did experiment with a new lighting system. (Which, I admit, isn’t really noticeable to casual fans.)

Really what new things did they try with Cars 2, Brave, and Monsters Univeristy?

Also, I didn’t think the “Dia de los Muetros” would still be in development or production. Either that or I forgot about the film.
