Is this the one you're talking about? I recall seeing this one a lot.

Though there's this other once I'm not sure if it was a pre-release poster or not, but certainly adds in more characters thrown in.

That cover is hideous and off model. Kill it with fire! [no really, the old cover for "We're Back!" was so much better... even better than the movie itself!]

The best OUaF cover is the original, which is basically the movie poster. The new cover is horrid.

Speaking of fun, here's a few pics to share here!

First from tumblr is some person's clever alternation of a Once Upon A Forest coloring/activity book! Just love what was done here.

Second, two great pieces of fanart of the furlings getting blitzed!

If anything, the moment where Abigail discovers the fate of Michelle's parents is what sold it for me. Of course I wasn't a kid when this came out (already a in high school I think at the time). Watching that moment again, I'm sure it was too late for the parents if they had succumb to the gas a long time before the guys came over. And although it was glossed over to some extent (I guess we don't need to be shedding tears a lot in this film), aside from Michelle instantly losing her folks and Cornelius becoming her only guardian, I also realized Cornelius also lost something near him as well, his sister (Michelle's mom), this is never even brought up, especially since both became orphans after their home was destroyed by human intervention. It's a little thing, really, but of course one that sorta irks me at times given where they could've gone in the writing of this film.

That mouse Abigail finds at that place certainly could've had a 'character' put in if they had gone further in developing whatever he was. I guess Abigail hasn't matured yet to see boys in a different light yet (assuming she's still like 12 or something in this story). They really don't waste no time being in that place for long once they get that flying machine together.

I like how Mason just can't wrap this film in his mind besides knowing the real culprit is the jerk with the pop bottle he just can't keep it in his car until he came to the next gas station. The whole deal with animals wearing closes or seeing them selectively naked in particular scenes never really bugged me at all, though I like the idea of selective sentience or to see those particular animals of Dapperwood simply being above the rest with their reliance of a more civilize pattern similar to that of man. Those types of stories are rather fun to tell from a standpoint (though why some animals chose not to wear pants has always been kind of a sticking point for many I've noticed, I guess some don't like fiddling around with getting their tails through those holes all the time). The moment of Edgar being stripped naked and trapped in a cage was perhaps overdoing it a little, if only to set up the conclusion that humans aren't bad people at all, at least to Cornelius. Thinking of hedgehogs, moles in cartoons always get the visual impairment deal simply because they're rather blinded by sunlight I think, though it's either wearing dark shades or simply wearing prescription lenses for the most part. This movie chose the latter so that's a given.

While this film was from Hanna-Barbera, it was from a division that was set up by Turner at the time that later changed it's name to "Turner Feature Animation" I think. They would go on to do The Pagemaster and Cats Don't Dance until Warner's bought out Turner's empire.

Apparently this film was based on some sort of work from a Welsh author/designer name Rae Lambert simply called "Furlings". I wish I knew more about the author or the original work, but apparently there was a story that the movie was adapted from called "A Furling's Story" written in 1989. The film itself is also a co-production between H-B and a Welsh TV broadcaster, HTV (now ITV Wales), though I'm sure nothing it it even screams Wales in the movie at all as it could be set anywhere in the world (which is just as well I guess).

The part about wanting to have a film more in line with Watership Down may be interesting departure from what was done here, but I don't know if I could handle talking anatomically-correct animals myself (Martin Rosen really loved to make it obvious they do have their necessary 'parts'), probably the reason why it's hardly done much in animation outside of indie efforts like that, this was a major studio effort and they weren't going to blow it (at least for a G rating, though Watership Down did get a G anyway and looked where that often landed in the video store).

And yes, this one's a tree-hugger type of movie (but then, I think Fern Gully was too, and I get both films confused since they were both released by the same company, Fox). It's not a bad film per say, more like another electronic babysitter fodder for the moms to go plop their kids in front of the set while they make dinner. They don't expect more out of this than something to stimulate those short attention spans.

At least I didn't suggest you guys watch "The Adventures of The American Rabbit"!
