This puts my mind at ease! I’m always worried my lack of past knowledge is going to not bode well. But as I said, I think it’s a good set! Totally worth the money.

I was just curious about it because I don’t have a Blu Ray player unfortunately and I’ve only been watching the DVD release and I was curious if it was really as bad as fans were saying or if people were exaggerating. I only have the DVD version Viz released so I can’t check it for myself. But I’m glad you enjoyed it and I’ve been enjoying the new Sailor Moon release myself! I just got the Part 1 Season 2 boxset recently and have been watching it a lot and I still love it. I personally think the new Viz release is a large improvement of the older DVD release ADV had put out years ago.

I thought the new voice cast did an excellent job once I got used to the change of voice pitches and preconceived expectations. While I totally understand and agree with wanting to update the translation to be more accurate (I myself am bilingual and it’s just one of those things that I go back and forth on [translation accuracy vs. translation precision]), my heart still yearned to hear the originals. In the end, I didn’t mind too much once I got into the watching the series.

As for this controversy, I’m not going to lie, this was the first time that I have been able to look at the series since I was a little girl (aside from YouTube clips and VIZ Media marketing), so to me, it looked pretty darn good. But, as a disclaimer, I also just seem to gravitate towards saturated colors, so that may also be why I’m in favor of the latest remastered version vs. what I’ve seen on the net.

I also grew up on the 90’s version of Sailor Moon so there’s a nostalgic feeling for me despite the hate-it-or-love-it feelings around with dialogue such as, “SERENA!”, “Meatball head”, “Totally cosmic!” or “Sailor Moon says…do your homework!” In one scene Sailor Mercury rebuffs (US dub name) Malachite by yelling at him, “Go bleach your roots, creep!” Hahahaha!!

But I am glad that they redubbed the show for the sake of authenticity; keeping the Japanese names of the characters, not cutting any footage that seemed graphic or violent, and even making sure the dialogue was as close to the Japanese version as possible. Some of those conversations were down to earth and insightful. One of my favorite episodes is the one with the talented artist Yumemi, who is shy and doesn’t show her face to her fans, asks Usagi and Mamoru to pose for her and Mamoru challenges her, “How can you make other people happy if you’re not happy yourself?” Usagi takes a more upbeat approach and assures Yumemi that she has so much to share with the world.

I was also happy to see the list of veteran voice actors who redubbed the show. Todd Haberkorn and Patrick Seitz have done *everything* in Anime. I found a hilarious Sailor Moon panel with them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2enN3YDFKl0

I don’t have a Blu Ray player but I have the DVD version of the VIz release and I didn’t notice any major issues with the DVD and I think it looks a lot better than the old ADV release. The only issue I have with it is that sometimes the colors look a little over-saturated at times but that’s what happens with most remastered DVD releases of classic anime so it didn’t bother me too much. But I don’t have a Blu Ray player to know what it’s like and I was hoping Rotoscopers would address the video quality controversy, especially with the supposed issue of ghosting problems.

What did you think of the new English dub? I too ached for the old voices, but it didn’t take too long for me to get used to the new ones!
