That’d be so awesome to have a shy, demure princess. Or a humble one as you said who doesn’t end up in the spotlight and doesn’t mind at all.

Hmm in some ways yeah, but she saved Eric’s life right in the beginning though, so not as much. She saw beauty in the human world and wanted to prove that the human world shouldn’t be hated but loved. I guess I saw her more as irresponsible. She asked the seawitch to change herself, not change her father.

Ariel is pretty selfish.

One part of me likes the idea that a fully-Hispanic princess is coming to add some Latina flair to the world of the Almighty Mouse, and honestly, I think Elena’s design is quite nice [though she’s a more-covered-up love-child of Jasmine and Esmeralda at first glance], and the tie-in to Sofia’s story is interesting.

The other side of me is more on the… “Why?” side of it all. I agree that it does feel like Elena is a product of marketing and “Oh, let’s add a Hispanic princess to get more Spanish-speakers to buy our stuff!” sort of things. It’s a new princess for the sake of adding more races and diversity to the “princess” title that Disney milks so dang much. Also, her story seems very typical – newfound princess learns to rule with her friends’ help and subtlety teaches kids culture… blah blah blah [not that teaching culture is a bad thing… but not many of the Disney Princesses really do that anyway].

Is “Elena of Avalor” really necessary? Not really. I think Sofia [who I feel is not a stereotypical “Latina” but works fine to me] is probably better, if only because she’s easier to relate to than these usual Princesses, Disney canon or not. Honestly, I agree that a DTV movie would probably be best for Elena, but Disney’s already got their minds set on a full-blown spin-off series and they want the milk the Princess cash cow through them kiddies. It doesn’t mean I don’t want to check it out once it debuts.

Now, where is that “Lion Guard” series they’ve only spoken about last summer? I’d rather hear more info about that than a new princess.

Merida covered selfish and maybe it was a bit too negative a trait, but yeah I’d like to see a shy one! it worked with Violet Parr. Also more princesses with specific interests too, maybe like Honey Lemon loving science but get more in depth into why. Or maybe a secretive humble princess that ends up being a hero without ending up in the spotlight.

I too don’t believe in having every race to have their own princess.
