I saw only on trailer for this movie. That’s right, only one. That’s not a good sign. And the trailer came out like two weeks before the movie. Also not a good sign. Needless to say, I didn’t waste my money on this.

I’m glad your audience enjoyed the movie – as I said to another parent, as long as it’s enjoyed, it’s worth seeing. And we’ll agree to disagree about the villain’s dimensionality. For the Sugar Plum Fairy, I don’t think the “gratuitous art” was just for critics; I’m willing to bet those little girls thought it, and she, was beautiful, in which case the gratuitous art served its purpose for both audience and critics. It may not have been a perfect film, for audience or critic, but I hope enough people, such as yourself and your audience, enjoy it so that we can see more and even better output from LucasFilm.

I loved the movie and so did all the little girls in the movie theatre. The constant singing was a bit annoying, but I don’t agree that the villain was weak or one dimensional, remember this is a kids movie. BTW, I don’t agree with your assessment of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Her scenes were gratuitous “art” for the benefit of reviewers, not the minor audience.

It’s a film that should be seen and supported in the hope that something significantly better is produced in the long run.

My only recommendation therefore is that you go to a cheap theater to see it – it’s not worth the $12 ticket (and $20 for popcorn and drink) I would have paid back home. While I’m in SoCal, the tickets are only like $7.50 (and the food was $11).

I am aware it’s not all Lucas, and tried to avoid specifically pointing a finger at him except to say that his name was the main draw for me. There were multiple writers so it’s hard to say who came up with what and how their process affected the film. My only point was to emphasize that many people were interested in the film because of his involvement and name recognition.

And, yes, it is one of the worst reviewed and deservingly so. I really hoped that the critics were harsh or that I’d at least be entertained. I was disappointed.

While I can already see this as an unpopular opinion, I don’t exactly think that Lucas is the main problem. Sure, he’s the brainchild behind the story, but I personally feel that he’s only a small part of a number of factors that all contribute to why this film is terrible.

Also, we’re not even done with the first month of the year and already it’s the worst-reviewed animated film of the year (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/strange_magic/).
