In reply to <a href="https://www.rotoscopers.com/2014/12/07/jorge-gutierrez-confirms-possible-trilogy-of-book-of-life-films/#comment-13256">Haley TheRadiant</a>.

"This is why we absolutely need The Book of Life sequels.

At the opening of the film, Manolo is surrounded by the loving presence of all his family members, living and dead. Meanwhile, across the graveyard, little Joaquin has neither of those things. He is totally alone, but still trying to do everything right in creating a great altar and showing his love and remembrance of his father.

Along comes General Posada who wants to trade in his daughter for a male heir, and he effectively promises Joaquin that if he wins all the fights and becomes The Hero, he will get to marry Maria and become the General’s new son.

During his disastrous attempt at flirting with Maria at the dinner party, what really gets to Joaquin is the idea of starting his own perfect Happy Family, with a mommy who cooks and cleans and a daddy who is brave and handsome, and they take care of each other and make each other very happy, The End.

At the end of the movie, just like the beginning, Manolo is surrounded by family and Joaquin is alone, but this time Manolo has EVEN MORE living and dead family, and they now truly accept him for who he is. General Posada, Joaquin’s would-be foster father, straight up adopts Manolo instead. He even gives Manolo and Maria the actual literal wedding- cake, gifts, decorations, feast, guests, etc.- that he originally bought to welcome Joaquin into the family.

Joaquin loses his magic invincibility, his almost-wife and almost-father, his ego, and half his face. And that’s it. Roll credits. Apparently, there was a version where he even lost his mustache!

I need a movie where Joaquin gets a family of his own!

A big family, with lots of kids and babies, cousins, aunts and uncles, grandparents, great grandparents, and a huge troupe of dearly departed relatives who will visit Joaquin on the Day of the Dead. A big noisy family that is always eating and singing and hugging and wrestling and getting in each others’ business. They don’t even care if Joaquin is some kind of pretty boy local hero- they care that he is one of them.

Make it all better, please and thank you."

In this case a prequel which explains the original bet between Xibalba & La Muerete would be interesting.

Jorge said he had a trilogy in mind when he first made the film, but he personally doubts that it will happen given that Book of Life wasn't a commercial hit. He still wants to make animated movies though :)
