I'll agree that the villain in Dragon 2 was bland but I think you're being overly harsh about 'preachiness', that's a matter of personal taste, I thought it was a plenty honest portrayal of characters standing up for peace. Big Hero 6 has it's own flaws, like an entire entourage of underdeveloped characters and missed opportunities, so both films are flawed beauties. But just wait until you see Song of the Sea, it has such a solid and original story, I feel it really deserves the win.

Author here.

I would very much appreciate it if you didn't copy-paste your previous comment to another one of my articles. While I appreciate that you've shared your opinion, I would also love to have some fresh words spoken about the subject, even if its a topic you've already gave your peace on.

Thank you.

Putting Nut Job and Legends of Oz under "possibilities" is... generous.
Also, I think your top 5 are pretty accurate. I never got around to seeing Boxtrolls or Book of Life (oops), and I don't think anything near me is showing Song of the Sea, but it definitely looks great. It shall be an intense battle.

The sad thing is is that the academy rarely chooses the movie based on how good it was, but on how popular it was. I think that the lego movie is a strong contester. I'm not so sure about httyd 2 but it was pretty popular. If big hero 6 keeps doing as well as it's doing, It will also be a strong contester

For me, Httyd2 was too dark. The Lion King had one of the darkest moments in animation history, Mufasa's death, but it had other elements to balance it out. You had the comic relief, Timon and Pumbaa, The romance between Simba and Nala, and we had the amazing music. Httyd2 lacked in almost all of these. It wasn't a musical, so no songs. It really didn't have that much comedy aside from one of the twins crushing on eret. Plus the romance between Hiccup and Astrid was completely sidelined. It could have been an amazing movie if these elements were executed correctly. I still think the first one is better, but that's just my opinion.

I personally think that whether or not The LEGO Movie wins will depend mostly on if the voters are comfortable with its genre and meta-heavy trappings (similar situation with BH6).

If LEGO does win, it will certainly mark a significant victory for Warner Bros, who's previous struggles with feature animation are well documented.

I saw an early screening of Song of the Sea and for me it was a perfect 10/10, totally enchanting as a ghibli film. I don't trust the credibility of the Academy anymore, but it's definitely my pick for the best film of 2014. Here are my choices:
1. Song of the Sea
2. Princess Kaguya (I haven't seen it....but it looks so amazing)
3. HTTYD2
4. Book of Life
5. Big Hero 6

Wreck-It Ralph arguably had the nominated Pixar film to contend with (I personally didn't think either film was particularly great), something LEGO doesn't have this year, unless the Academy ironically switches their bias to Disney and goes with Big Hero 6, but that has the superhero element so the Academy might not go for it, so they'd go with Dragon 2, but that's a non-Pixar animated sequel, so... there's pretty much no way to tell what they're going to choose. But I have heard really good things about Princess Kaguya, and I had reservations about my top picks (LEGO, Dragon 2), so I hope I can try and see it at some point.
