I really like this article, it's very well-written! :)
And it's totally true: I LOOVE this trope, because it can be executed in so many different ways, it isn't bound to any restrictions despite the very idea of friendship. Friends who complement each other by being different as can be, but having similar morals, beliefs or goals.
I think it's a very realistic situation, too - often, the people who seem like black an white at first sight form the strongest bonds, because they complement each other.
Even in stories which focus on one main protagonist, that person always has at least one other, 'most-important-person', who supports them, cheers them on, has their back. Displaying strong bonds on the big screen inspires the audience, giving them hope or confirmation that this can happen to them, too/is already there.
Because of those stories, I firmly belive in friendships that can 'transcend lifetimes' (ATLA nerd here), and I remember that sometimes I can't believe I got friends who are as amazing and supportive as they are. Love you guys.

Okay, I'm done :D

The Boy and His X could be categorized as as a sub-genre of the Buddy film, which has been around since the start. But it's also more then the basic cute sidekick idea. It works because of the basic human need for platonic relationships. I think Disney's Bolt did a verily good job of telling the Boy and his X story from both points of view.

I believe that its a strong core in relationships in real life. This happenes to me a lot cause I have always been seen as a huge jerk. And my parents filmed me when I was bonding with my niece. They said it was really heartwarming to see.
