Well I think that, for me, The Lego Movie is definitely the best animated film so far this year. Any advantages that it gets from a curve grading or anything like that are just bonuses really and should help to get it over the line. I think we’re all forgetting that in the last five or so years that there has been an influx of comedians (such as Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow) who have been let into the Academy and I could defintely see them voting for this film. That coupled with Lord and Miller’s recent critically acclaimed run should definitely help too.

And considering that Shrek won the inaugural Oscar for Best Animated Feature it’s not out of the realm of possibility that another film filled with pop culture references could take home the award. At the end of the day I won’t be upset if HTTYD2 wins but I believe that for many reasons The Lego Movie deserves it more. But as long as any animated film wins a mainstream award and shines some more light on this medium we’re all winners (I hope you wanted some cheese with this comment haha)

Yep, it definitely has the whole ‘superhero’ thing stacked against it, which could be why the whole Hiro/Baymax thing is being played up by Disney big time for the awards.

rbtck kinda took the words out of my mouth, but I’ll say it anyway: it may have the distinction, but it’s still, for all intents and purposes, a Disney property.

Now, I do think that it is definitely a superhero film through and through, no matter what John Lassater wants us to think otherwise.

I know. But again, everything that come out this year had to be accounted for. Think of it this way: box-office earnings are only just a part of the picture that they (the people holding these awards ceremonies) look at in order to consider a nomination.

No, money doesn’t make nominations. But strong box-office runnings make for good headlines, which makes for buzz, which can get a nomination, and possibly a win.

It’s all about publicity.

A disadvantage may be the fact that it’s a superhero movie, but since it’s animated this may not be a big deal, and it’s not more of a disadvantage than The Lego Movie has in being based on existing commercial toys and kind of a frenetic comedy most of the time.

How much money a movie makes really doesn’t affect it’s nomination. Space Jam was a huge hit back when I was a kid, but it didn’t get any nominations.

The public can believe whatever they want, but the movie will be announced as coming from WDAS, and if it wins then WDAS, not Marvel, employees will be handed the statuettes. This is, of course, because it is a WDAS movie, which, as is typical for them, barely resembles its original source material at all.
