I do have to agree, regarding Lotso not getting a satisfying enough punishment. Personally, I would've like to see him be burned ALIVE, as he could think on his sins as the stuffing is seared from his body!

I don't think a film has ever prompted such hatred in me as when Lotso didn't push the button. I agree, Michael Arndt is fantastic in prompting that sort of reaction in the viewer---it speaks to not only how good of a character Lotso is, but how invested we feel in the toys' outcome.

I knew Lotso was the villain before the movie came out, but my family didn't. So I hyped him up bigtime as this great new character. My sister even got a Lotso plush that she happily took to the movie theater with her. Well, the minute Lotso strapped Buzz in that chair she threw that thing to the ground. Lotso's great.

I just could not believe how much I love this villain! I mean he is just crazy relatable (I totally agree), and if you think about it Lotso is a ton like the Governor from the Walking Dead since well he sounds sorta like him and he has the same motives too in a way but at least Lotso lived

Lotso is, by far, my favorite villain of the Disney/Pixar movies. I think part of it is because he's voiced by Ned Beatty, one of my favorite actors, but there's other reasons, too. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that the fact that he's relatable is what makes him scariest. It's really scary to look at how cold-hearted and evil he is throughout the film, then look at what made him that way and see that it's something that could conceivably happen to any of us. I think that what makes those sorts of villains stick in our minds is that they force us to do some introspection, to look deep inside ourselves and ask if we'd react the same way in that situation.

By the way, Pixar seems to like to take that route with their villains; Syndrome's story in "The Incredibles" is very similar to Lotso's.

Anyway, great article!

I don't think I've ever truly despised a character as much as I despised Lotso. I hate him so much that I can't even sympathize with him despite his tragic backstory. And honestly, I think what happened to him was too good for the likes of HIM. That's right, being tied to the front of a truck was not satisfying enough for me. Personally, I can totally picture Strawberry Shortcake beating the shit out of him for stealing her strawberry scent gimmick.

All in all, very interesting article.

Very interesting about Lotso being the opposite of Woody! When you think about it, Lotso is probably what Woody would have become if he let his jealousy of Buzz get to him in the first movie.
