Simple.. is the first Mexican culture inspired movie that really makes you feel proud about being Mexican every single part of the visuals and how the characters act is based on pure Mexican culture, the figures made of wood and most important how the are constructed is pure Mexican folk culture, even the voices had real accents In addition, I love the fact that is set a difference between America and Europe (Mexico and Spain we are similar but not the same haha!)
The only thing I totally hated was the modern songs, maybe its because I love my culture too much but it was very disappointing, the songs were lazy, it was like " spend the money in the visuals and use generic songs". Don't get me wrong the songs are great, but no for this. They could have done a way better job on that creating something interesting and new, theres a lot of source of inspiraton for music at least give a fresh. adapted sound like Sony did on Rio.

I swear, every time I listen to 'I Love You Too Much' I turn into a puddle. In fact the puddle that the Candle Maker greeted in the movie was me. That was all that was left of me after hearing the song. XD

I went and saw this film: I should say that I really liked it. I have never seen such an upgrade of story from Free Birds to The Book of Life. Same to the animation. I liked the characters, visuals, the story and while the humor is hit-and-miss, I still think it's fine.
But at the end I really recommend this movie for Halloween/Day of the Dead if you're not up for something scary (like Annabelle). And being a Mexican myself, I really enjoyed the accuracy and how fun they make the message be (As long as you remember the ones that are gone, they'll never going to leave you), though I'd like to know if Death is fun like this movie represents.

Just came back from watching the movie! Not only me, but the whole family loved it! Even my mom who usually doesn't like going to the movie interested enough to join us. This article pretty much sums up how I felt about the movie. The only problem I have is I kind of wanted to get to know some of Manolo's family more, such as those twins but I suppose the movie would have been quite cluttered.

And for the fairy tale nerd in me, this sort of reminded me of this Mexican variant of the "Godfather Death" I heard once; both are based in Mexico, portray Death as female and have rooms with candles representing people's lives in them.I wonder if someone in production heard about it...

Being a born and raised Mexican, I was a little afraid about how the culture would be portrayed, especially since it was set right after the revolution, when the Spanish culture was still part of Mexico. I was afraid this would be one of those movies that confuse people and make them think Mexico and Spain are practically the same place. I was pleasantly surprised. Not only does it showcase the holiday beautifully, but there are so many other elements that filled the movie with Mexican culture. The music, the sugar skull designs, pan de muertos, the hearts everywhere, Carmen's chiapaneca dress, the adelitas, it was as if I was in Mexico City's craft market. And the design of the characters remind me of the wooden dolls they sell so commonly in Mexican markets. Overall, as a Mexican and an animation lover, I loved it!
