Um… not sure how to tell you this… Dreamworks has been doing this for about 10 years now. They released the first 5 minutes of Shrek 2 online when it was about to be in theaters.

I really like the opening clip! Looks like the movie is going to be a lot of fun.

True enough. I guess I just feel like it’s a lousy trend in general. Pretty soon the first half of the film will be released online, then you have to pay to see the second half.

Hmm… that’s not a bad marketing ploy…

Not sure how I feel about this, to be honest. I wrote an article a
little while back on avoiding movie trailers in general (
http://www.animatorisland.com/10-second-tip-avoiding-movie-trailers/ )
and now they’re releasing actual full bits of the FILM online? Sure, to
be fair it’s only the first four minutes, but still talk about entering
the theater with preconceived notions and knowing what’s coming…

I dunno, for me this sort of thing hurts the film more than helps. I’m
sure for the masses it’s the opposite, to build hype. One has to wonder,
though, couldn’t you just build hype by releasing great films
consistently? (Rhetorical, of course, the answer is yes, example: see
early Pixar.)
